Who Wore It Best: September Poll

Royal Hats

With news today that the Duchess of Cambridge is expecting her second child, I thought we might draw hats from her wedding for the this month’s first poll. When Catherine married Prince William on April 29, 2011, Princess Mathilde (as she was at the time) and Lady Frederick Windsor both chose Philip Treacy picture hats trimmed with with Treacy’s signature large multi-looped bow. What it is interesting about these hats is that they are moulded from a single piece of straw- if you look closely, there are no seams attaching the crown of the hat to the brim. While the colours are different and the brim on Lady Frederick’s hat is and oval shape, the two hats are decidedly related. That leaves me to ask, dear readers, who wore it best?

  1. I would prefer Lady Frederick Windsor to Princess Mathilde. With dramatic hat style such as this, I think it would give an outstanding appearance with a simple long outfit/ coat/ jacket which Lady Fred had displayed. Princess Mathilde chose a two-pieces outfit which created a look of too many parts to focus on plus she chose so shiny fabric & materials, a tiara as necklace and with too strong make-up. These do not work at all with this hat style. In addition, the placement of the hat in this case, made the Princess looking like an umbrella, to be honest. I have to say BRAVO to Lady Frederick on this occasion for going dramatic yet simple & modern with a touch of classic in there. She totally rocked in this ensemble.

    • Interesting connection! It makes sense, since I’m 99% certain both hats were designed by Philip Treacy.

Incidentally- Princess Michael’s hat came first, as she wore it to Ascot in 2010.

  2. Lady Frederick for mine, by a long way. The position of the hat is perfect and the colour blends beautifully with the outfit. As others have said, she looks effortlessly put together and the coat is a lovely style and cut. I do not like the hem on Mathide’s skirt AT ALL.

  3. I don’t like the oval shape of the brim but I am giving this to Sophie for total package points – colour, coat, hair, shoes, hem (can’t stand Mathilde’s clunky shoes or fluttery hem.)

  4. i voted for lady frederick windsor because i think this hat’s extravaganza needs a ‘quiet’ colour like the dark navy. mathilde looked lovely, no doubt, the darker version was just a tad better. a tad.

and congratulations to catherine and william!

  5. I love Mathilde and her family, and I love the blue color of the hat and her outfit. She looks great in the hat, but the overall effect with the total package is lacking. Sophie hit a home run with her outfit. Easy, effortless, and chic. I voted for Sophie Windsor.

  6. Interesting note about the seamless design of these hats. I never noticed that before. I also didn’t notice how similar these 2 hats are, worn at the same event no less! Love the Treacy butterfly bow.
