Who Wore it Best: October Poll

Royal Hats

Royal Hats

While our readers in the southern hemisphere are enjoying the start of spring, those of us in northern locations are watching leaves change colour and feeling the undeniable crisp coolness of autumn. Our polls this month are both going to feature fall-themed Philip Treacy designed hats trimmed with leaves. The first royal hat face off includes two Scandinavian crown princesses in monochrome wool felt hats. While the brims are slightly different, both hats feature tall crowns (related to a cloche shape) and are both characterized by their trim of trailing monochrome leaves (I believe, of the red oak variety). The question I put to you, dear readers, is who wore it best?

*For those of you eagle eyed readers who recall the Duchess of Cornwall in a hat with similar trim, you are indeed correct! We’re going to look at her hat, tomorrow

The poll will remain open until October 20 and we will celebrate the winner shortly thereafter. Happy voting!

  1. The shape of Mary’s hat reminds me of the yellow swathed bucket hat that the Queen wore this year in Northern Ireland. Not a shape
for everyday perhaps but I like it for a change and I like the bright colour and the felt flowers of this one on Mary. It has a bit of presence. The bland colour of Mette Marit’s outfit and hat doesn’t work for me.

  2. I like Mette-Marit’s hat much better, the brim is so interesting. I actually think MM looks rather nice here. I really like the belted coat with the 3/4 sleeve and long gloves. Because she is quite blonde I think there is just enough contrast between her hair and the overall colour scheme of the ensemble.

  3. I wasn’t a fan of either hat. The color of Mette-Marit’s hat washes her out completely but, of the two, Mette-Marit appears to carry it off better than Princes Mary

  4. Ooh, this is really difficult! Actually, I think the hats look better in both left-hand photos than either in the right-hand photos – so clearly, to me, the angle one is seeing them from is all important! I must say I love the colour of Mary’s. But I think both of these work reasonably well.

  5. Ah, democracy allows us the pleasure of being able to disagree. While I do agree that the beautiful blonde M-M would be better wearing something with more contrast to her fair colouring, I find the three dimensional cluster of leaves at the front of Crown Princess Mary’s hat and its overall, edgier shape more interesting and definitely more fun. M-M’s has a slight retro feel to it…anyone else reminded of Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca with that downturned brim?

  6. Mette-Marit looks monochromatic and dull as dishwater. Mary looks more colorful and interesting. That being said, M-M’s hat is the better looking of the two. I loved the color of Mary’s hat, but it couldn’t compete style wise. The shape isn’t there.
