As some of us prepare to trot out our Easter bonnets this weekend, I thought it might be a fitting time to consider flower trimmed royal hats. We’re already looked at Queen Elizabeth’s hats bedecked with the most blooms but, dearest readers- what other hats on other royal heads have the most flowers?
To increase the challenge of this discussion, all hats shared must have at least 10 flowers- any size, shape, colour or variety but there must be at least 10!

That coat is so beautiful. I actually felt the hat wasn’t the best pairing, it looked a bit too haphazard by comparison.
Agreed. Although with a solid colour frock, it might stand out well. But that coat and dress are among my favourite royal ensembles…. ever.

I came across this incredible photo this morning- Czar Nicholas and Empress Alexandra hosting a meal aboard the Russian Imperial Yacht Standart during the Cowes Regatta, 1909. The hats are flower laden!
So striking! The colorization shows the kind of detail that would be lost in a black and white photo. Maybe we should have a subcategory for Most Flowers on a Group of Royal Hats. Is that Queen Alexandra on the Czar’s right, and the Empress on his left? Too bad the other faces aren’t more visible!

My spouse and I just recently watched a documentary about Prince Albert on our local PBS station, which included showing a photograph of him as a relatively young man that had been “colorized” at the time under Albert’s own direction, I’m assuming by either painting or actual ink or pencil coloring. (Albert didn’t do the colorizing himself, I believe he came up with the idea and had an artist do it.) I’m guessing that from the moment photography was invented, there were people trying to figure out how to get those black & white photos to be in color.

Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother had quite a run of floral hats in the mid century era…….there were some real doozeys.. but high quality photos that show detail are difficult to come by.

I’m always surprised when we do these posts that Maxima’s hats don’t figure in. She’s so bold but I guess that’s because of the shape of her hats.
Interesting, indeed. There’s not much memorable trim on many of Maxima’s hats (except, I’d argue, the ones from Bettina Thomas).
Of her many hats from Fabienne Delvigne, I think this may be the only one with more than 10 flowers.

I wondered about Queen Beatrix, and in searching I discovered a whole collection of effervescent hats completely covered in feathers, but not so many with flowers.
