Most Flowers?

As some of us prepare to trot out our Easter bonnets this weekend, I thought it might be a fitting time to consider flower trimmed royal hats. We’re already looked at Queen Elizabeth’s hats bedecked with the most blooms but, dearest readers- what other hats on other royal heads have the most flowers?

To increase the challenge of this discussion, all hats shared must have at least 10 flowers- any size, shape, colour or variety but there must be at least 10!

    • That coat is so beautiful. I actually felt the hat wasn’t the best pairing, it looked a bit too haphazard by comparison.

      • Agreed. Although with a solid colour frock, it might stand out well. But that coat and dress are among my favourite royal ensembles…. ever.

Here’s another design on Serena, before bandeaux were the height of popularity they are now.

  5. I love the way the flowers are placed both on top and under the brim on this hat.

  6. I came across this incredible photo this morning- Czar Nicholas and Empress Alexandra hosting a meal aboard the Russian Imperial Yacht Standart during the Cowes Regatta, 1909. The hats are flower laden!

    • So striking! The colorization shows the kind of detail that would be lost in a black and white photo. Maybe we should have a subcategory for Most Flowers on a Group of Royal Hats. Is that Queen Alexandra on the Czar’s right, and the Empress on his left? Too bad the other faces aren’t more visible!

    • This is indeed a wonderful photo creation!

My spouse and I just recently watched a documentary about Prince Albert on our local PBS station, which included showing a photograph of him as a relatively young man that had been “colorized” at the time under Albert’s own direction, I’m assuming by either painting or actual ink or pencil coloring. (Albert didn’t do the colorizing himself, I believe he came up with the idea and had an artist do it.) I’m guessing that from the moment photography was invented, there were people trying to figure out how to get those black & white photos to be in color.

  7. And then this spectacular hat on Camilla before her marriage – I really wish her choices were as bold as this now, it’s so beautiful. Embed from Getty Images

  8. Princess Margaret clinging onto the flower covered helmet style in the 80s (and another chance for a look at Birgitte’s Xanadu style headband!

And an absolutely fabulous flower and veil bedecked number on Princess Alice back in the 40s. Embed from Getty Images Yes

  9. Have always loved the hat Princess Caroline wore to Prince Albert’s civil marriage in 2011. It is the perfect hat for the Mediterranean coast!

  10. Crown Princess Victoria was photographed in floral headpieces for her 28th and 29th birthdays (the 29th is the blue and yellow combo). Hope everyone is having a hip-hop-happy Easter!

  11. Queen Silvia at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2007. (For the first time in its history, the flower show will be held in September this year, instead of the traditional May.)

  12. One more of the Queen Mum — in a gorgeous floral turban. Totally appropriate for Easter, though worn here during The Queen’s Silver Jubilee.

    • I love that black hat. This is also cute on her.

      • This Jane Taylor design with feather flowers is another one from Sophie’s closet that sticks out in my mind.

Although… I think this might be her hat with most flowers (a bit of a cheat, I know!)

  15. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother had quite a run of floral hats in the mid century era…….there were some real doozeys.. but high quality photos that show detail are difficult to come by.

This one can’t be embedded but is worth a click!

      • Zara Tindall has a few. They don’t come close to the 1960s hats but I think they are worth including!

        • Great hats on Zara. And the 1960s flower turbans are so fab!

I’m always surprised when we do these posts that Maxima’s hats don’t figure in. She’s so bold but I guess that’s because of the shape of her hats.

          • Interesting, indeed. There’s not much memorable trim on many of Maxima’s hats (except, I’d argue, the ones from Bettina Thomas).

Of her many hats from Fabienne Delvigne, I think this may be the only one with more than 10 flowers.

  16. I think Princess Alexandra might have a few. This is the best photo I could find of this hat but the flowers go all the way around.

  18. I tend to think of Haya when we have these biggest/most posts. This one just looks like a lot of flowers because they’re so big:

but I think this is a contender:

  19. Some Danish flower hats (although no daisies for Margrethe?):

And taking it back over 100 years to this hat worn by Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain:

  20. 1977 was a very floral year in celebration of HM Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee.

From Silver Jubilee tours domestic and abroad (apologies, these are all QEII):

This probably doesn’t have 10 flowers, but considering men’s hats rarely feature flowers, this is probably the closest we’ll get (Philip on Silver Jubilee tour):

Jubilee Day 1977 itself saw a plethora of floral hats (a recent John Boyd hat on IG reminded me of Margaret’s hat from this event):

  22. The Queen Mother’s tour of Canada in 1974 was very floral. Unfortunately, the only transferable images are all b&w;

I wondered about Queen Beatrix, and in searching I discovered a whole collection of effervescent hats completely covered in feathers, but not so many with flowers.

  25. This one from Max at ascot is the first that came into my mind- I adored that whole look:

    • I adore the flowers on this hat!

  26. And talking of favourites, Anne’s perennial blooms and the Queen Mum’s lily of the valley take flowers to their limit!

  27. Ooh exciting! If it’s going to be multiple blooms here’s a couple of old favourites to get us started. Ascot, naturally!!

    • Hi Isabelle- this is a great hat, however, we need to link to photos that include copyright information. Most articles on news or entertainment sites do this but Pinterest does not.
