Over the weekend, Princess Benedikte’s son, Prince Gustav of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg was married to his longtime partner, Carina Axelsson. The couple celebrated a civil ceremony on Friday and a private religious ceremony on Saturday.

For the religious ceremony, Carina wore a lovely silk gown with lace coat by Birgit Hallsten. She topped the look with the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg Diamond Spike Tiara you can read more about here and an intricately patterned veil you can see below.

We wish the couple sincere congratulations.

Danish Royals On Land and Sea

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark laid the foundation stone for Mary Elizabeth’s Hospital at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen on Monday. For this event, she repeated a rose-beige straw picture hat. The hat’s brim, bound in wide cream binding, follows a lovely curve upward around the front and the hat is simply trimmed with an ivory hatband that ties in a bow at the back. It’s a classic design that belies its age, which is always nice to see!

Catching Up Danish Hats…Again!

We have another handful of hats to catch up on in Denmark!

May 18: Princess Benedikte repeated her navy textured straw hat with wide, upturned brim for the first of a two-day visit to the German island of Sylt. While not visible here, I think the hat is still trimmed with a large grey silk flower, which would link well with the floral skirt in this ensemble.

And finally, today Queen Margrethe visited Tivoli amusement park and pleasure garden to mark the 50th anniversary of her accession, a celebration put on hold until now because of the pandemic. She repeated her pink beret with with side twist trim, taking it for a spin on a roller coaster. I think that might be a first for a royal hat!

I’m afraid to say it but… dare I hope we’re back to royal hatted events, as they were pre-pandemic? It’s certainly nice to see events happening again. What do you think of these hats?

Confirmation of Princess Isabella

On Saturday, Princess Isabella celebrated her confirmation at Fredensborg Castle Church. She wore a pair of silver leaf embellished combs in her hair by Ellen Hunter, worn previously by Crown Princess Mary.

Queen Margrethe wore a new hat for the occasion, a beret covered in the same cobalt blue crepe as her jacket. The hat is trimmed with two tall black feathers and a bow in the printed fabric as the ensemble’s dress.

The colour is wonderful on the Danish queen, who wears saturated and jewel tones so well. The patterned dress provides great contrast to the matching hat and jacket, saving the two pieces from looking one note. I’d love, however, to remove the patterned bow on the hat (that is a step too matchy matchy!) and replace it, with something in the colours of the ensemble.

Crown Princess Mary wore a natural woven straw bandeau with tan tulle birdcage veil.

While my initial reaction to this headpiece was a yawn, I think the colour was a brilliant choice to pair with Mary’s vibrant pink dress and turquoise accessories. Say whatever you want about the shape, it’s a very current, popular style that is easy to wear and works well for a less formal event such as this.

Princess Marie repeated her pink sinamay fascinator with central bloom surrounded by a circle of pointed leaves. The slim feathers that originally trimmed this design have been entirely removed. Princess Marie has paired this headpiece with neutral outfits in past, something I think works a bit better for a working royal event. This, however, is a family event and whiile the coral suit here is not to my taste, it’s a light hearted, fun choice to celebrate her niece!
