Orchid Adornment

Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway are on the second day of their official visit to Indonesia. No hats have been seen so far but Mette-Marit showed up for dinner tonight in Jakarta sporting some beautiful orchids. Since we seldom see any headgear on this princess, I thought it was worth noting! I love this homage paid to her tropical hosts.

British Royals Welcome the Amir of Kuwait

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip welcomed the Amir of Kuwait today for a three day state visit to England. The Queen wore a dove grey straw beret with dramatic side feather for the event. It’s not her usual hat shape but I thought it was a nice change. I’m just not sure about that feather.

Duchess of Gloucester at St. Paul’s

The Duchess of Gloucester attended the Festival of St. Cecelia at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London today (Saint Cecilia is the patroness of musicians and church music). Brigitte looked beautiful in a sky blue straw beret with stylized bow on top. The colour and shape were so very flattering on her; I think this is one of the best hats she has ever worn.

Monaco National Holiday

Today is Monaco’s National Holiday. As part of the official celebration, the Monegasque Royal Family attended a mass in the Cathedral of Monaco. As an official event, all the royal ladies (except for Stephanie, who seems allergic to headgear) wore a hat.

Let’s start with the good, shall we? Princess Caroline of Hanover & Monaco was dressed in a new Chanel suit (as usual!) but repeated this bold fuchsia and black netted cocktail hat. The hat was last seen a decade ago (at the Monaco National Holiday celebrations in 2002) but does not look it’s age. I thought it was great.

Charlotte Casiraghi was glamorously chic in an understated black hat. While some may have looked too informal in such a hat, she looked amazing.

And now for the less than good- Princess Charlene topped a gorgeous navy coat dress with a black bumper hat trimmed in a swath of blue net veil.  The flat-as-a-pancake shape feels costumey to me, like a prop used long ago by a comedian after he sat on it.
