British Royals Visit Manchester

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh carried out a series of engagements in Manchester today. The Queen took this opportunity to unveil a vibrant new hat! While this hat, made in royal blue wool, follows the same shape as Angela Kelly’s “split crown hats“, it features a contrasting band of turquoise piping around the brim and a band of rough edged royal blue and turquoise yarn trim. With her coordinating coat, the whole look takes on an almost neon level of vibrancy but I’m not sure that’s such a bad thing. She is, after all, the lady that everyone comes to see. I am very curious, dear readers, what you think of this new hat!

  1. I’m not a fan of this style. The Queen must like it as she keeps wearing these split crown hats. Personally I find the trim is a bit twee. However the colour looks glorious with the makeup and pearls. Hope I look this good when I’m her age !

  2. I think the outfit is striking. I prefer this split crown to the recent pink and black, since in today’s hat both halves of the crown are one color. The split crown as well as the vertical line in front of the coat both give the Queen added height.
It looks as though the dress is the turquoise fabric. If it is ever worn without the coat but with the hat, I think the hat would look even more spectacular than it does with the busy coat.

  3. I have figured out why I like this hat shape on the Queen no matter the fabric or colour scheme: it just hints at being a stylized crown.

  4. Well it’s definitely bright – but I rather like it. I know Angela Kelly comes in for some flak (and I agree with a lot of it, some of her designs take a gimmick a little too far, and can look a little bit homespun), but when she’s good, she’s very good. She can give things a nice twist to save it veering to far into safe, and I think this one does it rather nicely. And you won;t miss her in a crowd – which I guess is the point!

  5. I think she looks marvelous here. She looks very good in this color. I do like her hat, but I think it would have been better without the split crown.

  6. I do like this hat a lot. Some of these hats in this shape are too stark like the one with the color blocking (pink and black) splitting the crown of the hat. But when there is some softness added to this hat style and the colors are I guess i could say more traditional like this color blocking is (here it’s not color opposites), I like this hat silhouette on her. She has been wearing a lot of bold colors this fall which is been fun to see. We have seen her in a number of bold pinks, a real bold turq that I recall and now this shade. With her hair color now, these bold, brights look great on her and I don’t think everyone as short as she is could really pull them off as well as she does. I give this one a big A grade in my book! Thanks for the nice photos. Gosh…how does she do it? She just goes and goes!
