On the last day of their Christmas/Winter holiday month spent at the royal Sandringham estate in Norfolk, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip attended Sunday church service. The Queen repeated a pale grey coat and hat we last saw on her a year ago. This brimless hat seems to be an interesting variation on a beret with a tall straight side and diagonally sloped crown (UPDATE Several readers have correctly identified this as a toque hat). Trimmed with an awkwardly erect feather on the side (visible here the fist time the Queen wore this hat), the dull colour of this hat and it’s odd proportions does not make it one that I particularly like. What do you think?
Designer: unconfirmed. I believe it is Angela Kelly

I think she looks absolutely wonderful!
I’m not too fond of the colour, but I really like the hat, it is such an interesting change in shape from the more usual ones we see, and makes a statement in a very elegant and understated way.
I really like both the hat and the coat, this is very unusual if they are indeed the work of Angela Kelly – I find her styles mostly “overdone” when compared to the elegance and simplicity of hats designed by Rachel Trevor Morgan
I find it a very suitable hat for an elderly Queen who still cares about how she looks. She wears it. It doesn’t wear her always a plus in my opinion.
I love the design of the coat collar, but the hat is not so popular with me. The color is a bit too light and washes the queen out. Maybe in something a bit darker (not brighter) would be better.
That hat just screams Queen Mary.
My thoughts exactly. I have an affection for this hat for just this reason.
Absolutely. Queen Mary wore toques just like this.
You’re right. It’s much more of a toque than it is a beret!
I actually think this is a regal-looking hat. (Pictures from 27 Nov 12 wearing are the best.) Its shape and color are so unusual for the Queen (nice to have a little variety, though, I guess). I keep thinking that if not stored with extreme care, that feather will be easily crushed.
I too think it’s AK. At least in her book written a couple of years ago, she shows her sketches for this coat (with the swoopy front yoke).
I do like color and shape – nice change from acid colors and “mad hatter” shapes of recent hats:). elegant infact .
also, this color “whispering blue” or “winter sky” is one of my favorites but from 2014 color pallette for millinery supply(so even recycled it is
up- to-date)
