Queen Enjoys Turriff Show

On Monday, following the World War I commemoration service at Crathie Kirk, Queen Elizabeth visited the 150th Anniversary Turriff Agricultural Show in Turriff, Aberdeenshire. She repeated a hat we haven’t seen for a while- this pale blue, fabric covered, square crowned cloche trimmed with buttons. I have always thought the button detail was a cheeky and unique trim for a hat and adore the beautiful way the fabric drapes over the short brim. I feared this hat had gone into retirement and it’s nice to see it again.

  1. I like this hat on her, I really love the buttons trim, what a nice idea that is. And QE11 looks like she is really enjoying herself and is in her element ………..so love this grand lady!

  2. This outfit has had lots of reincarnations! The new trim around the coat is so much better, much more subtle and modern. The addition of buttons on the dress was perhaps a little unnecessary, it looks more uncluttered/clean on previous wearings, but I do love the fabric and it is not a major criticism. And the buttons on the hat have had a fresh change around. All good stuff because I think it looks so cute!!!! So whimsical and dinky and very much suited for such an engagement. I love it, the buttons are such a fun change. What a thrill for the people of the area to have HM visit their local show. Thanks.

  3. I still don’t understand why the buttons on the hat were moved around in 2009, although the remake of the coat was a good idea. Adding the buttons to the dress did not help, though.
Nonetheless, the hat is pretty and a welcome change from all the hats that exactly that match the coat and dress fabric that are dangerously similar to this.
I share others’ noting that the Queen is wearing (heavy-looking) long coats in warm weather with increasing frequency. When she wore this exact outfit in December (2009) in Oxford, was it a unusually warm day, similar to August in Scotland?

    • A light coat is common in this part of Scotland in August. A sunny 12 degrees C (about 54 F) is not uncommon in my experience! I have seen the kind of fabric the Queen is wearing and believe it may be a cotton, linen, polyamide and viscose boucle tweed. If so it’s a beautiful but expensive lightweight material for summer jackets and coats. That said the Queen appears to feel the cold. I remember when she addressed the United Nations in New York when it was 100 degrees F and it was quite a while before she shed her coat! I love seeing the dresses underneath when she does as at the Commonwealth Games recently..

  4. I like this hat, and the restraint on the button trim is admirable. I saw it from a different direction on another site and it looked like the waves of fabric on the top of the brim were a bit wonky on the right hand side. Did you see that? Maybe it was just the angle of the shot…

  5. I like this hat–the buttons make it a little more casual and I think the Queen looks great in any shade of blue. Two thumbs up!

  6. I’ve always liked this one, and like you thought it had been retired – it was a staple for a while and I’m pretty sure it had even more outings than you’ve picked up. I liked the original coat trim, it just lifte the coat a bit, but that’s a quibble. She’s clearly having a good rummage about at the back of the closet; I wonder what else is going to reappear…

  7. I like this hat – but it’s shape sort of tosses me back to the late 50s-early 60s when so many of my mom’s friends were wearing the then really fashionable bucket hats – somehow this hat paired with the jacket in this photo looks dowdy, as if it was an after thought to grab and hat and head out the door which we know never happens to QEII!

  8. I love this hat! I don’t love the buttons on the dress though, but echoing the trim from the coat on the hat looks lovely to me. The weather said it was 63 F, my 81 year old mother in law would have a coat on too! She freezes if we put our a/c (I live in Florida) below 75F! Thanks, Dear Hat Queen, for all the lovely pictures and stories lately. I may not comment often but I check your blog at least twice a day!

  9. I like the hat as it is not over decorated even with buttons. The colour is nice. The overall outfit with all of the buttons on the coat and Silly neckline trim is awful . So unflattering . Same horrible coat design over and over. For that matter the same hat shape over and over. Her designers must be in a serious rut. Is it really necessary to wear a coat in the present weather? I see people in the background with bare arms.
