Dutch Monarchs on Day 2 of Chinese State Visit

The second day of the Chinese state visit to The Netherlands yesterday saw another new hat worn by Queen Máxima! This sweeping headpiece in pale pink stripes strongly reminded me of the hat Queen Mathilde worn for her enthronement last year (I think the two hats are made of the same material). At first glance, I didn’t think I liked this hat… but when I saw it with Máxima blush pink dress (without that dowdy brown coat), I thought it was beautiful. I think there is something about the lightness and movement that makes it so lovely. What do you think of this interesting new hat?

Birthday of Princess Eugenie

Royal Hats Princess Eugenie of York celebrates her 24th birthday today. Some of you may recall that one of the royal hat highlights of 2013 was the millinery makeover we watched evolve for Princess Eugnie and her older sister, Princess Beatrice. While Eugenie’s millinery wardrobe contains some wonderful designs from Neraida Fraiman, Stephen Jones, Philip Treacy Sarah Cant, and Robyn Coles, there is another designer I would love to see her in- British milliner Raina Lehmann. Her highly artistic hats are such a great fit for Eugenie’s style and burgeoning career in the auction world. Wouldn’t this round dish cocktail hat with hand-dyed flower sprays be breathtaking on Princess Eugenie?

Dutch Royals Welcome Chinese President

Chinese President Xi Jinping and first lady Peng Liyuan were greeted at Schiphol Airport this morning by King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima. For this historic event (the first state visit by a Chinese president to the Netherlands), Queen  Máxima wore a new calot made of pleated and ruched black crepe. I thought this hat worked well with her voluminous black crepe blouse, although the effect was diminished with the addition of her bland brown coat. And, it is rather unfortunate how from the side view, this hat mimicked the Chinese first lady’s bouffant hairstyle (unintentionally, I imagine).
