We tend to think of cocktail hats as a relatively new invention but this photo of Crown Prince Olaf and Princess Märtha of Norway, taken 74 years ago today while on a brief trip to Canada, shows otherwise. The details might be different but there are certainly threads of continuity between royal hat style in 1941 and royal hat style today!

Lovely.
This is a timeless hat! As gorgeous in 2015 as it was in 1941!
I agree SalannB.
I’m not usually a fan of the cocktail hat, but this one is pretty!
Quite similar to the hat Princess Caroline wore a few weeks ago

This is a fabulous hat and would work in 2015 too!
Ok, that photo looks like someone glued Olaf’s head on to someone else’s body. Martha’s hat is lovely though, and I could see it being worn today but certain royals.
Love it.
Odd stuff, the white around his head, but her hat is splendid. I can see it on Kate
I was fortunate enough to see an exhibition of Princes Martha’s clothes at the V and A in London a few years back. I was so impressed that I managed, fairly recently, to buy a copy of the book produced to accompany this exhibition. Her cloths were all so lovely, imaginative, and beautifully constructed. If you ever have a chance to see them – not sure if this exhibit will be mounted again – run, don’t walk. You will, enjoy it.
I like it.
