74 years ago today, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor presented a polo trophy at a match held in Nassau, Bahamas, their home during the second world war. For this event, the Duke wore a straw boater hat while the stylish Duchess wore a calot hat with fluted brim framing her face. From this photo, it’s hard to imagine that Europe was in the throes of war (and that this couple had been at the center of one of the greatest royal scandals of the 20th century).

Shameful, but well-dressed man.
I agree with what TiarasRUs says: January 31, 2015 at 3:06 pm. I think the King saw that war was approaching in Europe and stepping down from the throne to marry a twice divorcee would ensure that he could escape from remaining King. I also agree with what Antonie Cloete says:
January 30, 2015 at 2:37 am, the Duchess was always a stylish dresser. She kept her slim figure and made the most of her looks, while not being a natural beauty. I agree with what Penelope says: January 30, 2015 at 8:01 am, it’s hard to get a proper look at the Duchess’s hat, but the Duke’s looked good and was typical of its time. I agree with what Bristol says: January 30, 2015 at 6:56 am, at first glance I also thought her hair was arranged in little horns!
The Duke and Duchess of Windsor always dressed stylishly. They both wore some amazing hats. Her jewels were stunning, including that flamingo brooch she is wearing in the above photo. I remain baffled as to why he gave up the throne for a twice divorced average looking commoner.
Sorry, all I can see is the gorgeous Flamingo pin….his hat is fantastic.
The Duke was always a sharp dresser. Look at his shoes!
Hard to see her hat from the angle the photo was taken and that it is a black and white photo. The Duke’s hat was a popular one during that time period, wasn’t it?
I suppose it’s a hat! At first glance it seemed to be her hair arranged in little horns…
When I was growing up, the Windsors were always featured in women’s magazines, and I have always thought of her as very stylish and elegant. I was never a fan of the big jewelry she wore, but she could pull it off effortlessly.
The Duchess of Windsor was for 40 years on the list of Best Dressed Women in the world. Not a real beauty, but always stylish.
