‘New’ Hat From the Past #28

Royal Hats20 years ago to July 1, 1997 and a visit to Ottawa when the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh shared cake with other couples also celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. The queen’s pink straw hat was trimmed in brim piping and a slim second hatband in the same floral print silk as her suit, with a large bow and feather spray at the back. It’s a larger brim that we usually see her wear and while the piece might be more attractive to contemporary eyes with less trim, it’s an eye-catching ensemble I’m surprised not to have noticed before.

Her Majesty repeated the ensemble in October of the same year during a visit to India.

  1. I quite like the fun patterns. They are a refreshing change from the typical mono-chromatic ensembles.

  2. The hat is most attractive. Don’t care for the patterned dress and jacket (although it does match the floral display before them in India.)

  3. She went through a phase of these larger, more trimmed hats around the millennium. They are a good development from the smaller, less flattering hats she tended to sport before, but were bettered by the ones she moved onto; particularly when Rachel Trevor Morgan entered the frame. It’s nice enough, but the look could do with toning down slightly (that self pattern in the fabric bugs me in particular).
