Queen Elizabeth’s Iconic Hats: 1950s

We continue our quest to identify Queen Elizabeth’s most iconic hats with a look at those worn during the first decade of her reign- the 1950s. When you think about her 1950s hats that are “widely known and acknowledged especially for distinctive excellence” which ones come to mind?  As always, feel welcome to link to articles, youtube videos or photo galleries featuring a particular hat but please avoid pinterest links and any hotlinked photos.

Queen Arrives At Balmoral

While Queen Elizabeth informally began her summer retreat in Scotland several weeks ago (staying in a cottage on the Balmoral Estate while Balmoral Castle was open to the public), she officially arrived at her summer residence today. For the arrival, where she inspected the Pipes and Drums of 4 SCOTS Royal Regiment of Scotland at the Balmoral Castle gates, she wore a new hat.

In sky blue felt, the hat features a flat crown with slight hourglass shape and subtle sidesweep on the brim. The hat is wonderfully trimmed with cut green feathers, gold sprigs, large amber glass beads and small blue heather flowers.

The hourglass crown shape is a but clunky for my liking but easily ignored with the trim. Is there too much embellishment? Maybe, but the mix of colours and materials in the trim add interest, delicacy and colour contrast to the design that makes the hat work really well against the rest of the all-blue ensemble that I think I can overlook its overabundance as well.

This Week’s Extras

Queen Elizabeth wore her turquoise fabric covered hat with side floral posy and bows by Angela Kelly to church in Scotland last Sunday.

We have two events in July to catch up with Princess Hisako- on July 27, she wore a white hat with vibrant green hatband and purple twisting flowers to take in a calligraphy exhibition. The next day, she reopened the Japanese national football training center in a leaf green hat with square crown and multi layered brim with upturned kettle edge and gentle sidesweep, a hat that is fantastic on her.

Queen Anne-Marie of Greece in a chic straw Panama hat in Porto Heli.

Princess Anne in a casual summer look complete with straw hat yesterday at the Festival of British Eventing held on the grounds of her home, Gatcomb Park. Today, relaxed hats were spotted on several members of the Phillips family.
