Queen Visits Royal Lancers

On Monday, Queen Camilla paid her first visit to the Royal Lancers since being appointed as the regiment’s Colonel-in-Chief. The appointment has a personal connection, as her late father, Major Bruce Shand, served with the 12th Lancers during World War II

For the visit, Queen Camilla wore a new red felt beret hat trimmed with the regiment’s crest and striking yellow and black feathers.

The red hat is clearly a nod to the regiment’s uniform, as its trim (along with the red collar, brass buttons and metal shoulder epaulettes on her coat). It’s clearly not a hat we’ll see worn with other ensembles and for what it is, it works really well. I like this take on military dressing for the new queen, including elements of the regimental uniform but interpreted in a design that’s wearable for her.

Several of you have contacted me, asking if this is one of Camilla’s other red felt beret hats with new trim. You’ll see here, by comparison, the others are different:

  1. I can see what she’s doing, it’s well made, thought through and tailored. She looks great, and well put together (not always a given with Camilla!) But like others I do find it tips a little too far into cosplay; I just feel of it had fewer military elements it would work better. But no matter, Camilla has certain looks she tends to stick with, and as this is the second version, I predict we’ll see a lot more of these.

  2. It’s perhaps a bit costumey, but I do like that Camilla is trying something a bit different and bringing a little extra color to this ensemble; overall it’s a thumbs up from me. Also, it’s certainly a nice connection to her father.

  3. This is not an ensemble that can be worn often, or just anywhere, for sure. I love the bright red color, though. Yes, it has a costume vibe to it.  Perhaps Camilla could get more mileage out of it if the insignia and epaulettes are removable. She must be careful getting an and out of cars with those flying feathers!

  4. Hi. I want to like it but I don’t. I think a military inspired outfit is lovely, but this one and last year’s Trooping outfit both feel a little too close to imitation as opposed to inspiration. I think Kate hits the military inspired much better than Camilla. The hat’s color is lovely, but the coati is a hard no for me.
