Ascot 2024 Day 2: Gloucesters & Kents

For the second day of racing today, the Duke of Gloucester repeated a grey felt top hat while the Duchess repeated the pale oyster pinokpok circle bandeau she first wore last weekend for Trooping the Colour. Photos today show a veil over the open crown of this headpiece, a feature that makes it look like a modern snood.

Ascot 2024 Day 2: Princess Royal and Family

Princess Anne attended the seconed day of racing in a new navy sinamay hat. The design features a slanted crown and wide brim, raised on one side. The underside of the brim is trimmed with machine sewn cream (what is that material?) and navy straw stripes, which are repeated as a hatband. The hat is trimmed with two large cream silk roses and a spray of navy and white feathers and curled quills.

In theory, I love a graphic navy and white hat for Anne, who is so well suited to the classic colour combination. However, with very wobbly striped trim, a machine pressed hat shape and oddly placed feathers, this ready-to-wear piece simply lacks finesse and fine finishing.

Mike Tindall repeated his black antique silk top hat. Zara wore a fluted saucer of layered pink and ivory sinamay, trimmed with an ivory silk abaca bow. Despite it’s small size and pale colour, it’s a hat with great impact and energy that makes a fantastic counterpoint to Zara’s patterned dress. It’s another great look for her this week.

Ascot 2024 Day 2: The Edinburghs

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh celebrated their 25th wedding today at Royal Ascot! The Duke repeated his black antique silk top hat (still the most gleaming one in the family)

The Duchess wore a white sinamay hat with dramatically extended brim on one side, trimmed with a slim sinamay hatband and large white crin swirled flower.

It’s a romantic choice, perhaps an anniversary statement? I’m neither a fan of the parts- the pale colour lessens the hat’s impact, as does it’s lack detail and the less I say about the dress, the better- nor do I like the overall look, which reads ‘historically inaccurate Edwardian costume.”

The standout piece here, for me, is the Duke’s tie, printed with jockey silks and saddles! What are your thoughts?

Ascot 2024 Day 2: York Family

The York sisters both attended the second day of racing today, both in pale pink hats. Accompanied by her husband Edouardo in black silk top hat, Princess Beatrice wore a wide bandeau covered in silk, trimmed with a spray of silk flowers and a silk abaca bow.

It’s a really pretty design that pairs well with this floral dress (the same one worn Monday to the Garter service by the Duchess of Edinburgh).

Ascot 2024 Day 2: Queen & Prince of Wales

Queen Camilla attended the second day of racing at Ascot Racecourse today in a second, new, blue hat! This design, in cerulean blue sinamay, follows the same angled crown and upturned brim on one side. That hat is trimmed with flying hatband sashes in rolled straw in various shades of blue.

The saturated colour is wonderful on Camilla and the hatband sashes are a high-impact trim that give such great movement (and those lovely tonal blues!) to the design. We’ve seen numerous angled crowns such as this shape on her and I’m ready for something different. What’s most disappointing for me, however, is the visible row of uneven maching stitching around the brim edge. This brim should have been hand stitched with barely visible stitches.
