Swedish Royals Celebrate National Day

On Saturday, members of the Swedish Royal Family gathered to celebrate their national holiday. The King and Queen kicked off celebrations with a morning visit to Örebro’s County Museum where they viewed an exhibition of the city’s 750 year history. For this visit, Queen Silvia wore a new white calot hat what looks like a teardrop shape. The hat is simply trimmed with a flat white rosette and brown leaves.

Prince Carl Philip attended högvaktsavlösningen (changing of the royal guard) in the Outer Courtyard at the Royal Palace. I believe his uniform and cap are related to his ranking as Captain in the Swedish Royal Navy.

In the evening, the entire royal family processed by carriage from from the Royal Palace to Skansen for an outdoor concert. Princess Estelle joined the procession in folk costume topped with a blue and yellow braided headband.

As they do each year for national day celebrations, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Madeleine all wore Swedish national dress complete with distinct folded white caps.

It looks like a wonderful day was hat by the Swedish Royals and it was lovely to see them together before this Saturday’s big wedding.

Day Two of Indian State Visit To Sweden

Queen Silvia used the second day of the Indian state visit to Sweden yesterday as an occasion to début a new hat. The calot hat, which looks to be made of straw, was clearly custom dyed to match the Queen’s turquoise silk dress. We often see Queen Silvia in hats the same hue as her clothing and while this approach to hat wearing often creates a one-note, boringly matchy ensemble for other royals, Silvia carries it off well. Why? I think the keys are hair and hat shape. Silvia’s dark hairstyle creates enough contrast between hat and outfit, especially when the hat is a pillbox or calot style worn on the back of her head. This monochrome approach to daytime royal dress does not work for everyone but Queen Silvia seems to have it down to a successful science.

Swedish Royals Welcome Indian State Visit

The Swedish Royal Family welcomed Indian President Shri Pranab Mukherjee yesterday for the start of a three-day state visit. Crown Princess Victoria met the Indian delegation at the Stockholm airport in a new picture hat. Made of blush pink straw, the hat featured an unusual off-centre peak atop the crown, a mushroom shaped brim and a signature Treacy looped bow trim at the side. Philip Treacy’s SS 2015 collection features a number of hats with this distinctive peaked crown shape, a shape that feels new and very creative. The crown’s more masculine shape contrasts well with the hat’s traditional brim and provided the edginess needed to keep Victoria’s all pink ensemble from looking overly sweet.

Queen Silvia topped her royal blue suit (not purple, as it shows below) with a coordinating calot hat trimmed with a spray of feathers at the back. Calot hats are such a complimentary shape for Silvia’s hairtstyle and the feather trim gave this one some light hearted personality. The colour is beautiful on Her Majesty and her printed blouse pulled the ensemble into perfect balance. It’s a good look for Silvia, don’t you agree?

Prince Carl Philip and his fiancée, Sofia Hellqvist, joined the group for official photos. Sofia wore pale pink fascinator bow with feathers around the back of her chignon (you can see a great view of it here). This is a pretty enough piece that seems fitting in her not-quite-royal-yet role. I hope after she officially joins the royal family on June 13, she will retire these small fascinators in favour of more substantial millinery pieces.

Swedish Royals Visit Gotland

Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel visited the island of Gotland yesterday. For this visit, which included stops at a nature reserve, a refugee support program, military training ground, a furniture company and a meeting about youth entrepreneurship, Princess Victoria was chose a white trouser suit and coordinating fedora hat. The hat, in white straw, was simply trimmed with a navy and white striped band at the past of the crown. We don’t see Victoria in many fedora hats but this one was island chic at its best.

Marriage Bans Published For Swedish Royal Wedding

Banns for the marriage of Prince Carl Philip of Sweden and Sofia Hellqvist were published yesterday during a service held in the Royal Chapel of the Royal Palace in Stockholm. As with previous publications, the Swedish Royal Family were in attendance and hosted a reception following the service.

For this occasion, Queen Silvia wore a new ivory calot hat trimmed with a several huge silk cabbage rose and twisted straw ribbons. The hat was entirely covered in pearl studded net veil (see a close-up here) that gave immense texture to the piece. Unfortunately, the impact of the elaborate trim was lost by precarious placement way off the side of the hat and dulled by its monochrome pairing with the Queen’s off-white bouclé suit.

The bride-to-be, Sofia Hellqvist topped her eggshell and grey suit with a teeny tiny black cocktail hat (a hat that at first glance, I mistook for a large moth). It seems Sofia is taking baby steps when it comes to embracing millinery as this small cocktail hat, trimmed with large bow and a single feather, is marginally bigger than the fascinators we have seen her wear in the past. Thank goodness there will be much opportunity for millinery practice by this future princes, as the twee bow and too-small scale of this hat just missed the mark.

Crown Princess Victoria also chose a much larger scale hat than she typically favours. In the same pale slate blue as her dress, Victoria’s percher cocktail hat was built on a fabric covered beret base.  Lavishly trimmed with the same twisted straw ribbons, an oversize silk flower and multiple silk bow loops that were on her mother’s calot, the vertical design of this hat gave it better balance and presence. Victoria seldom wears such embellished pieces and it was a nice change for her. Princess Estelle sported an adorable silk multi-looped hair bow.

Princess Madeleine wore the most daring hat of the day. Built on a pale pink disk of straw, her cocktail hat featured large curled  and twisted ribbons of straw. The sculptural hat is considerably larger than what we have seen Madeleine wear in several years and against her caramel mane of curled hair, worked surprisingly well. Little Princess Leonore wore a petite pink hair bow.

It’s not often that we see most members of a royal family in hats by the same designer at a single event. This gave a unified look to most of the hats at this event and makes me curious, dear readers, which hat stood out most to you?
