Swedish Royals Celebrate Historic Ordination

On Sunday, King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia and Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden attended the ordination of Archbishop Antje Jackeléns, the fist female archbishop in Sweden, at Uppsala Cathedral. For this historic occasion, Queen Silvia wore a cream straw lampshade style hat with a side bloom. It is another traditional hat for the Swedish queen but paired with her beautiful pink coat, created such a pretty ensemble.

Crown Princess Victoria wore a black picture hat with a sweeping brim and simple white band around the crown. It is a rather austere picture hat as far as they go but it worked so well with Victoria’s clean-lined white dress.

What did you think of this pair of Swedish royal hats?

Swedish Royal Christening: Extended Family

As I wrap up a review of the hats at the Swedish royal christening on Sunday, I thought we would take a quick peek at some hats worn by members of the extended Swedish royal family. The King’s sister, Princess Christina (who is Princess Madeleine’s godmother), wore a purple flower fascinator trimmed with wispy purple feathers. I love the contrast of this shade of purple in her white hair but paired with her purple dress, coat, and wrap, the look was rather one-note.

Princess Margaretha (to the left, behind Chris O’Neil) wore what looks to be a white feathered fascinator. To her right (immediately above Chris’ head), Princess Désirée to her right seems to be wearing a white calot hat at the back of her head. We’ll have to save judgement on these pieces until better photos are available.

Countess Gunnila Bernadotte of Wisborg (widow of the King’s uncle Prince Carl Johan of Sweden)  wore a stunning pale grey straw hat. The under side of the brim was in  white straw, edged in slim black piping and the hat was trimmed with a black sash around the crown and large black loops. Countess Marianne Bernadotte of Wisborg (widow of the King’s uncle Prince Sigvard of Sweden) wore a lovely mint green straw hat trimmed with a monochrome ribbon around the crown and spray of silk blossoms on the side.

Bettina Aussems (wife of Queen Silvia’s nephew Thomas Sommerlath) topped her red sheath and scarf with a simple hat in the same colour. Embellished only with a ruched sash around the crown, I thought this hat was a great tutorial for effective monochrome dressing.

Maline Sommerlath (wife of Queen Silvia’s nephew Patrick Sommerlath who was named one of Princess Leonore’s godparents) followed the unofficial dress code of the day: lace dress + fascinator in the same colour. I thought the headband on this fascinator drew too much attention away from the bloom itself and would have preferred it hidden in her hair. This one fell a little flat for me.

And finally… Prince Carl Philip’s longtime girlfriend Sofia Hellqvist wore a grey looped bow fascinator trimmed with white net and feathers. I found this headpiece most haphazard, with the trimmings unrelated to the looped bow (and another visible headband problem). Sofia’s hair was beautifully styled for a fascinator but this was not the right one.

Looking back at all the marvelous millinery at this christening, my favourite headpiece was the one worn by Crown Princess Victoria. I am curious- which one was your favourite?

Swedish Christening: Immediate Family

It is no surprise that the families of Princess Madeleine and Christopher O’Neill were both in attendance for Princess Leonore’s christening yesterday. What was surprising, however, was that they nearly all shopped at the same hat designer! Let’s start with Queen Silvia, who wore a large fascinator of twisted ribbon tails  in blue straw, trimmed with a large blue net veil. It was clearly custom made to compliment her blue lace Valentino dress and like Princess Madeleine, the overall effect was very light, airy and delicate. The last time we saw Queen Silvia, I wished a more modern millinery style for her; today, this wish was granted.

Crown Princess Victoria also eschewed a hat in favour of a dramatic headpiece. This one, in the same muted pink as her dress, wrapped around her head in a loose trio of bands and anchored a huge silk bloom at the side.

I will admit that I was on the fence about this headpiece (you all know how I feel about open-topped hats) until I realized it was a reinvention of the one Queen Silvia wore on August 31, 1979 for the christening of Prince Carl Philip. After making that connection and seeing this modern reworking of the original, I decided that it was wonderful on Victoria. The Swedes certainly do create sweet and emotional touches at big events, don’t they?

Christopher O’Neill’s mother, Eva O’Neill, also wore a Philip Treacy designed headpiece that wrapped around her head. While I loved the shimmery gold of the headpiece paired with Ms. O’Neill’s pale yellow coat, the wide layers made it look too much like a wrapped bandage.

Chris O’Neill’s sisters, Countess Natascha Abensperg und Traun and Tatjana D’Abo, also wore designs by Philip Treacy. Natascha’s black cocktail hat featured a bejeweled base topped with a net ring and a curling feather spine while Tajana’s jaunty vertical hat in cream straw was trimmed in large signature Treacy silk flowers.

Chris’ remaining two stepsisters,  Anna Lisa O’Neill and Karen O’Neill, were the only immediate family members not in Philip Treacy designs. Anna Lisa wore a very pretty transparent black straw hat with a multi-looped bow and Karen wore a pleated cocktail hat trimmed with a net rosette and feathers.

The hats today were not what I was expecting- they were edgier and more haute couture than we usually see for a major royal event. Since I love royal millinery surprises, I’m going to consider this day a royal hat success. I can’t wait to hear you all weigh in!

Swedish Royal Christening

Princess Madeleine of Sweden and her husband, Christopher O’Neill, brought their infant daughter Princess Leonore to the chapel at Drottningholm Palace to be christened yesterday.

For this special event, Princess Madeleine topped off her pink lace Valentino dress with a delicate net veil headpiece trimmed in pink applique flowers. It was an unexpected choice but one that worked well with her delicate dress. The whole look was very light and pretty.

Swedish Royals Celebrate National Day

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden kicked off celebrations for Sweden’s National Day yesterday with a visit to Ånge. For this visit, Queen Silvia repeated her white straw pleated calot hat trimmed with a net veil and rosettes at the back. While this is a good hat style for her (particularly with her hairstyle), I would love to see her try something more modern.

In the afternoon, the Swedish Royal Family left the Royal Palace by carriage to attend a National Day concert at Skansen. Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Madeleine all wore Swedish national dress complete with distinct folded white caps.

Little Princess Estelle joined the procession, also dressed in national costume with a white bow in her hair. I can’t decide what is more adorable- her hairbow or her royal wave?

As this was Princess Madeleine’s first wearing of national dress as a married woman, she was able to add the folded white cap to her ensemble for the first time. She wears it well, doesn’t she?

Hats, flags and nationalism aside, there were two images of the day that were most special. The first was Princess Madeleine presenting her baby daughter Princess Leonore to the Swedish people for the first time. Little Leonore did not wear a hat but she did appear in miniature national dress.

The second was this image, released by the Swedish Royal Court, of this future Swedish Queen in national dress and white hair bow. Adorable, isn’t she?
