Hat From the Past

Royal Hats59 years to December 19, 1962 when King Leopold III of Belgium returned home from a trip to Brazil and was met by his wife, Princess Liliane, in a chic leopard print turban and matching muff. Leopard print for Leopold?! Am I the only one smelling a romantic private message here?!

Hat From the Past

Royal Hats  Eagle-eyed reader Sarah passed on a most interesting royal hat find a few months ago and I thought it was high time to share it with all of you. This Ebay listing featured a hat from the estate of Princess Lilian of Sweden. Made by Scottish milliner John Boyd, the toque shaped hat is covered in pleated cream and navy silk and trimmed with handmade silk pompoms. The photos below show all sides of the hat including a peek inside- a view we never get to see! It’s a wonderful piece of exceptional quality and workmanship.

Unfortunately, I first saw the listing after it had already closed and was unable to make an offer. Whoever the buyer was, they are the lucky owner of a small piece of Swedish royal millinery history.

Thanks for sharing, Sarah!

Farewell, Princess Lilian

A Memoriam

Princess Lilian of Sweden, Duchess of Halland, passed away today at the age of 97. Born in Wales in 1915, Lilian’s story is legendary- she married young, divorced, met her Swedish Prince Charming, and spent more than 30 years quietly waiting to marry him (you can read the details here or  here). Princess Lilian and Prince Bertil sacrificed much for the Swedish monarchy; the Swedes repaid them with great affection. As we say farewell today, here are some millinery memories from Lilian’s remarkable life.
