Dutch Royal Family Remembers Prince Friso

On Saturday, a public memorial service for Prince Friso of the Netherlands was held in Delft.

Princess Mabel wore an open-crowned design of black rings we have seen on Queen Máxima numerous times previously. Princess Beatrix wore a large straw hat with flat crown and brim. The band around the crown was repeated in a wide band around the brim.

Queen Máxima wore a rounded black velvet felt pillbox with bow at the back. Princess Laurentien wore a black wool unembellished turban.

Princess Martha Louise of Norway (her father, King Harald, was Prince Friso’s godfather) wore a tilted black wool bowler. Countess Annabel of Oyenhausen-Sierstorpff (a relative of Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands) wore an avant garde giant black wool feather with a sheer brim. While I am usually gleeful to see an over the top hat, I don’t think a memorial service is the time to sport one.

  1. I like that the children are dressed in gray. Black is much too harsh and the white was appropriate for the actual funeral.

  2. Lovely gesture by King Harald’s children to attend. Good choice of dress for Mabel – the black for mourning, the big white bow as a remembrance of her wedding. All the hats are perfect except Countess Annabelle’s.

  3. Forgot to say Maxima looks very elegant. Do not like Laurentien’s boots. IMO they look a bit out of place for this occasion. Mabel is wearing her VIktor and Rolf gown that she wore for King Willem’s inauguration which has clearly been shortened.

  4. Poor Johan-Friso, he was my favorite. Mabel’s hat looks exactly like the Fabienne D. hat Maxima wore to her last child’s christening in 2007. I’m sure you have a picture somewhere. I think Countess Annabel’s hat is lovely.

  5. Such a sad occasion. Princess Mabel, Princess Beatrix, Queen Maxima, Princess Martha Louise and Princess Laurentien each chose a very beautiful hat. I do not like Countess Annabel of Oyenhausen-Sierstorpff hat at all. I find her hat utterly ridiculous. My favorite hat was the one worn by Princess Beatrix.

  6. Even though it was a sad event for all intended, all the ladies looked really great in their choice of hats, mostly fond of Queen Max’s hat and Mabel’s. Hoping that with time things get better for them!
