British Royal Men At Work

The Duke of Edinburgh and his grandson, Prince Harry, carried out their first joint engagement today, opening the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey. For this event, which marks London Poppy Day, both men were in military uniform. Prince Harry wore the Household Cavalry Cloak Order over his regimental dress uniform, topped off with the pale blue beret of the Army Air Corps. Prince Philip wore Royal Navy day ceremonials in his capacity as Lord High Admiral of the Navy. While the Duke has opened this event for several years (after taking it over from the Queen Mum), this was the first year he brought Prince Harry along and I thought it was very touching to see them together.

the Prince of Wales, who is currently on tour in India with the Duchess of Cornwall, met students at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun today. While I should focus o nhis military uniform hat (with poppy worn on the side), I must admit that I just can’t take my eyes off Camilla’s gorgeous dress and coat.

Belgian King and Queen Complete Inaugural Tour

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium enjoyed the final stop on their inauguration tour of their country with a triumphant entry into the capital, Brussels this morning. For this homecoming, Queen Mathilde unveiled another new hat – a tomato red picture hat with square crown and medium sized, slightly upturned brim.

I thought the hat shape was wonderful on Mathilde although the colour is REALLY bright. I suppose the hat coordinated well with her coat and dress (better than with a beige dress) and the pieces balance each other. It takes some serious fashion bravery to pull a look like this off.

Princess Beatrix in Doorn

Yesterday, Princess Beatrix opened a new building at the Basic Foundation’s facility in Doorn (a training and aftercare center for active and post actively serving military personnel). She repeated her rose-brown straw hat with triple high-rolled brim and pyramid crown. The last photo hides the pyramid top and I think that is a much better look for this hat…. but I’m not going to complain. After Prince Friso’s memorial on the weekend, it’s just lovely to see Princess Beatrix looking so bright and well.

British Royals Welcome South Korean President on State Visit

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh welcomed President of South Korea, Park Geun-Hye, for the start of a three day state visit today. The Queen continued her recent streak of bright pink has with this new straw chapeau with flat crown and short, rolled, open-weave brim. It looks like the bands around the brim edge and crown are made of the same wool velvet as her coat. I particularly like how the different textures provide so much visual interest on what is otherwise, a rather simple hat. What do you think?

Queen Máxima at the Prix de Rome

Queen Máxima attended the Prix de Rome awards this morning and debuted a new hat! It is one of the more unique hats we have seen on Máxima (for those of us who know Máxima’s millinery, that’s saying something). This hat is a variation of a calot in light tan wool with curled ribbons and a mass of feathers on top. The hat also has a fold of wool that forms a pointed flap at the front. It’s so unusual and different what what we have seen Máxima wear before that I’m still making my mind up about it. What do you think of this millinery showpiece?!

Update: stevesteef commented that this hat represents a bird. I found another photo and indeed- it does!
Second Update: photos from the second time Queen Máxima wore this hat show the bird sculpture (made of feathers!) more clearly.
