Dutch Royals Visit Rome

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands visited Rome today where they met with Italian President of Senate Pietro Grasso. Máxima repeated her unique tan wool calot trimmed with a pink feather bird sculpture. It is a hat she wears well (and not one many others could pull off!) but I preferred the tailored coat she paired with her dress the last time she wore it, rather than the unstructured overcoat she wore today. What did you think?

    • This photo was not taken at a royal or public event. I want to try and keep hats worn by royals in their private life away from this blog. But by all means- continue to post links in the comments!

  1. WOW…………..This whole outfit is sooooooooooo wrong. (First) the color on her is a washout, it is murky and dull and makes her fade into the background, (Second) the fit is way off, it’s like she poured herself into it, it’s toooo tight and ill fitting, (Third) what with that hat, birds flying off the top of her head…….now what was she thinking or perhaps not thinking. She is usually a great dresser and has so many beautiful hats, what happened? I sew, went to design school, make jackets and dresses and many things for my home……..lately her dressers or whomever is giving her ill advice on her clothes. If I buy something in a store, I turn it inside out and check everything and usually don’t buy it because I know I can make it…….oh no Max. Even the coat she was wearing was wrong, was it William’s?
I will say the jewels where beyond beautiful, those are to die for and her make-up was great….

  2. I agree with others that this hat requires an updo. Also agree with HQ that this outfit does not quite work. The solid color is spot on, but the fit, “unstructured”as you say, looks too casual for the more formal hat style. As for the jewelry, I like it on its own, but would have preferred something very understated with this hat.

  3. Well, that is really over the top. Almost enough to make me go off hats all together! Las Vegas is the only place that might fit in. Someone played a joke on her? Her expression leaves me wondering if she is not entirely comfortable in that either. Glad others have different opinions.

  4. Max looks really fabulous here. Her makeup is very flattering and of course she always rocks the jewelry. I agree that the unstructured coat is not a great look, however, she does pull it off. When I first looked at the pictures, my first reaction was that I would prefer that hat with her hair pulled back but not the faux ponytail she sported last time. If she is going to wear a hair piece, make it the low chignon that Sophie Wessex does so well. It would look perfect with this hat. Lastly, the overall look is very chic but I do wish that I had not looked close enough to see the little bird head and beak. Kind of creepy…

  5. This is a splendid dramatic hat. But I think it is one that really needs hair to be up underneath it, it somehow looks wrong with loose hair.

  6. I agree, the overcoat does not compliment the dress. As far as the calot is concerned, I agree that only Queen M. can carry it off. The calot reminds me of Peter Pan’s hat with added feathers.

  7. Far too baroque, way too much going on. The bird itself would be sort of charming and fascinating on an otherwise clean lined hat, but when one adds the vining, and the leaves, and the scrolls and flourishes of the hat structure itself, it just seems TOO much. And, in the same breath, may MrFitzroy add…..Maxima almost makes it work!!!!!
As far as the coat, some other photos that show it open, reveal that the seam edges seem to be bound with flourescent orange reflective tape, whats up with that?

  8. This is one of the most creative hats I’ve seen here. Very good work and imaginative styling. The designer deserves to be known.

  9. Without the coat, in the last picture, Maxima looks amazing, the colours and proportions really suit her, she looks every inch the queen.

    • She does look a bit wrinkled, though. Sometimes I think her clothes aren’t properly fitted. But she wears the hat with absolute confidence, which one cannot help but admire.
