Hat from the Past

The Royal Hats Blog   On February 10, 2006, Prince Albert of Monaco attended the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. These photos of the perennial bachelor, who looked like he was working hard to impress a mystery blonde date, were an international sensation. I don’t think anyone in the royal world suspected that the goofy prince in the red ski hat would marry the mystery blonde, South African swimmer Charlene Wittstock, five years later.

  1. Gosh, I didn’t realise it was Charlene. How come she is never photographed smiling like this now? I often wonder why Victoria Beckham chooses to put her hand over her mouth so she is never seen (photographed) smiling or looking happy as her “look”. Is Charlene just copying that “pose” for some reason? We’ll probably never know but I wish she would still show this warmth and happiness just now and again.

  2. They polished her up since these photos. Compared to more recent photos, it looks to me that her teeth have been fixed and the deep lines around her mouth have been “erased.” She looks genuinely happy in these older photos. She may also be happy now, but she rarely breaks out now in a grin like here. If you didn’t identify her, I would think it was a different person!

  3. I would never have recognized her…hmmm. They seem very happy and I hope they have many more happy years together. They both need to wear more hats!

    • Obviously, because it shows how only 8 years ago everyone blew off this relationship as another one of Prince Albert’s girlfriends and now, she is Princess Of Monaco. And she looks pretty different. And because we’re all seeing the photos on other royal websites of them now and it’s pretty interesting to see where they started.

  4. I can hardly believe that was 8 years ago already. I remember these photos so well from the papers and magazines and all the excitement about our Charlene and the prince of Monaco… Time flies.
