Belgian Monarchs Visit the UK

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium traveled to Great Britain today to pay an official visit the British Monarch. Queen Mathilde debuted a new calot headpiece covered in black feathers for this visit. Paired with her black and white dress, I thought she looked very elegant.

  1. Gorgeous outfit on Mathilde. The rolled neckline sets off her head and neck beautifully. The hat and her hairstyle are perfectly integrated. The calot is elegant; the black feathers provide some texture in contrast to the smooth fabric of the dress.

  2. In my opinion, she is ( always) wearing these kind of calots/ hairpieces, too far back on her head. Yoy can hardly see them when she is standing right up in front of you. When you are looking at the first, the fourth en fifth picture, you can see what I mean. Nevertheless i think she is a very charming, elegant en noble woman, with an impeccable appearance.

  3. I see this outfit including the hat as more appropriate for say cocktails or dinner followed by the theatre. It’s elegant but not quite right for this event and so is a miss for me.

    • This wasn’t the only event M attended this day. It may have been a little too for lunch but they also laid a wreath at Westminster too, so I suppose she had to bridge a couple of levels of dressing and I thought she did it well.

  4. This hat is further proof of what a millinery genius Fabienne Delvigne really is. Most other designers would have put an oversize hat with this dress but here we see how effective restraint can be. I can’t say how much I love this whole look for Mathilde.

    • One cannot hardly miss wearing black and white! It almost always looks smart and elegant and this is no exception. I love her simple little hat, as well.

  5. Queen Mathilde looks so lovely except for that thing on her head, if only it had been a real hat instead of 1/2 of a hat. She is a lovely lady seems so gracious and kind and she wears hats well, this is a miss for me.

  6. Queen Mathilde looks so elegant. I don’t usually like feathered hats but this one works so well with this dress.

Does it seem unusual to anyone else that Queen Mathilde is wearing a hat but Queen Elizabeth is not?

  7. Queen Mathilde’s whole updated/streamlined retro style vibe is just working fantastically for her!
This hat is so classic but so modern all at the same time, with a vintage edge that doesn’t get costumey.
The whole ensemble is lovely (it’s nice to have a little break from the statement prints) and MrFitzroy hopes she continues this fabulous winning streak.
She is making some of her royal contemporaries look a little messy and underdone in comparison. Mathilde and QE2 look wonderfully complementary together as well!
