Queen Máxima Celebrates Dutch Development Organization

Queen Máxima of the Netherlands attended a lunch in honor of the 100th anniversary of Dutch international development organization, Cordaid, yesterday in Amsterdam. For this event, she repeated her natural straw hat with dramatically upturned, diagonal brim. We have seen this hat paired with a number of different dresses but this for this event, Máxima wore it with trousers. The monochrome nature of this ensemble is rather chic but since I am a traditionalist at heart, I would love to swap the trousers for a coordinating skirt. I love this hat but there is something that just strikes me odd about a picture hat and trousers. What do you think?

  1. Love the hat but the rest of the outfit is a hot wrinkled mess. Too much going on with the bow on the hat and blouse.

  2. Not sure, I could like it a lot as very chic but something is off. Maybe she needs a little color somewhere? I like the one color but don’t like the giant pussy bow. I would replace that with a large scale printed scarf. I need paper dolls of Queen Max so I can play!

  3. I like this hat, but the trim is ugly. With a big hat like this, I think a wide skirt would look best, plus long sleeves. The pussy bow is over the top. I like the trousers, but they do look a bit casual for such a statement hat. I don’t like the belt at all, it looks cheap and draws the eye to it as it’s darker than the blouse, hat and pants. I don’t like the peep-toe shoes, they look too informal to go with the hat. The little brown bag is OK. The fabric of the pants looks creased also. This is not one of her best looks.

  4. I am with Barbara on this one, I think the whole look is very chic and I have absolutely no problem with the hat and trousers. I think Maxima looks easily, casually elegant and very comfortable. If looking for a negative, I could perhaps say that the hat embellishment looks as though it has got a little squashed over time but that’s at a push. Lovely.

  5. This is SO Maxima! Oversized hat, charming look but sometimes a little over the top. But would we have her any other way?

  6. It’s not the trousers that are the issue – it’s the picture hat plus the bow plus the belt plus the trousers. Edit the bow and the belt, and the hat is very chic with the trousers.

  7. Love this hat. The bow I can live with though it’s quickly straying into over the top territory. The belt is just awful. Also, dressing in ‘biscuit’ from head to toe is never a good idea.

  8. I am going to go out on a limb and say I think the picture hat looks surprisingly chic with trousers!! At my advanced age (74) I am usually very conservative in my taste….. but this I like.

  9. Love the hat but it needs a dress or skirt – the proportions are all off with the short sleeves on the blouse and then the long slacks with no leg – it’s just a big wrong in my book

  10. Really like this hat. Great improvement over the small band ….convertible hats in straw colour we have seen her wear recently. It does not go well with slacks even well tailored slacks. Seems too top heavy for slacks. Liked the hat more when it was worn with the patterned dark blue and think light beige dress. Seems to need a dress with a full skirt.
She wears many in this colour it seems. This one goes well with her hair unlike earlier bands she has worn. It’s a winner in its own right but not when combined with slacks.
