Empress Michiko Honors Japanese Milliner

Last Monday, Empress Michiko attended a memorial for Akio Hirata, the millinery who designed hats for Her Imperial Majesty since 1966. In tribute, she wore a pale grey saucer made by Hirata for the event.

  1. Yes, my eyes instantly went to the lady in the top hat. Interesting look. I too would love to see a post about The Empress’s hats, they are always very discreet. Cheers.

  2. Forgot to say, is the top hat of the lady next to the Empress by the same designer, do you think? It’s certainly different! Can we imagine any royal lady wearing that?! Possibly one of the younger ones at something like Ascot, maybe?

    • I suspect all the hats at this event were made by Akio Hirata. And yes- it would be marvelous to see some of the more bold designs on one of the Imperial royal highnesses!

  3. I’m not fond of these tiny saucers hats in the abstract, but I do think the Empress has evolved a style that is instantly recognisable, in which these hats play a large part. Being distinctive is a major plus for a monarch or consort. The style itself is totally different, but having developed a style and sticking to it like this reminds me of the late Queen Mother.

  4. It is interesting to see the range of hats produced by this milliner. The post also made me do a search for the Empress’s hat styles over the years. Such beautiful detail on her hats and outfits and I would love to see more information about her brooches too. A very distinctive style but exquisite execution. I am a fan.
