Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh met guests at a Garden Party at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh today. The Queen repeated one of her Teardrop Crown shaped hats, this one in the same pale blue silk as her coat. With it’s high, Mad Hatter-esque crown, I find this oddly proportioned and dull hued hat to be neither attractive or flattering. Thankfully, Prince Philip was looking wonderfully dapper in his top hat (and leaves a more positive note on which to end this post).

I was privileged to be there. The Queen’s hat was not white but very pale blue, lovely and fresh. She looked beautiful.
Thanks, Clare. It is sometimes hard to tell the exact colour of a hat from photographs. I am curious- did this hat look better in person than it does in photos?
Thank you for sharing this encounter with Her Majesty!
This may not be my favorite, but I think it is a nice and serviceable hat. I like the trimmings too, for a change.
oh dear me. It’s rather sad when a man’s top hat trumps the ladies chapeau! I am just sick to death of those modified top hat’s on the Queen. However, since looking back at some of the horror’s she has worn-such as that helmet we just revisited, I think maybe she has no opinion and just puts on whatever is given to her. She has done this for so many years, maybe it doesn’t matter to her. I wish those dressing her, respected her more!
excellent observation. I was thinking the same thing. She has more important things to do and think about then her hats.
I think this hat is most attractive when viewed from the right (while facing the Queen):
From that angle one doesn’t see the teardrop effect.
The hat goes beautifully with the dress. The coat isn’t particularly interesting, may be too tight even.
It looks like the Queen and Prince Philip are both wearing top hats. The Queen’s appears to be blue in the pictures. I think the Queen looks better in hats with a softer appearance. Does the weather require her to wear coats?
Oh dear HatQueen. You sound as if your are a little tired of the Queen’s hats and when that happens surely you are tired of life! I prefer this hat with the silk dress in previous wearings including with the white shoes although I don’t worry too much about the black ones.
Not to worry, I’m not tired of the Queen’s hats! I’m just not going to be friends with this one! I really do think that some of the beautiful Angela Kelly designs we saw the Queen wear in France recently show a new, more streamlined and elegant aesthetic in her designs. I’m just not crazy about some of these older ones.
Whilst I agree it’s not as elegant as some of the lovely new ones she’s debuted recently, I don’t actually mind this – he shape doesn’t upset me at all, and the trimming is nice I think. Not crazy about the coat though, that seaming isn’t hanging well.
