Queen Elizabeth Commemorates Start of WW I

Queen Elizabeth attended a service at Crathie Kirk Church today in Crathie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the start off WW I. She repeated a white straw stovepipe hat trimmed with a spray of feathers on the side and a white satin braid around the base of the crown. It’s not my favourite hat as the crown feels disproportionately high for Her Majesty’s petite frame but this white ensemble felt fitting for today’s commemoration.

Designer: Reader Baxter identified this hat as the work of French milliner Marie O’Regan
Previously Worn: March 31, 2014October 14, 2005October 15, 2004; April 5, 2004

For those of you curious about Prince Philip’s whereabouts today, he attended a separate service at Sandringham church. Unlike his son and grandson, he was not dressed in uniform.

  1. I like this hat, the whole outfit actually. As does Her Majesty by the looks. I really liked looking back at the pictures of her in it when she unveiled the Windsor Greys statue. Thanks.

  2. I actually love that hat! That whole ensemble is one of my favorites. Glad to see it’s back in the rotation.

When it was first worn during the state visit to France, I recall reading that the hat was by a French milliner, so it is likely Marie O’Regan.

    • The picture of the Queen in the middle of the pew inside the church is rather amazing. Thanks for the link.
While I like the coat, the hat isn’t particularly attractive or interesting. I too wonder how this outfit happened to show up again (twice in last two months) after an absence of almost a decade.

  3. I agree with you – whilst I like the monochromatic nature of this outfit, I think the crown is just too high. Curious that this outfit has gone back into rotation after a ret if almost a decade isn’t it!

She also dug out the blue tweed button hat earlier in the day as well. Which has also had a rest – of about 4 years I think!

    • Stay tuned tomorrow- in the midst of today’s busy day of royal hats, I have the blue button hat in queue tomorrow! It is rather fascinating that this white hat has come back into circulation after such a long time hung at the back of her closet. I suppose like the rest of us, certain pieces fall out of favour, only to become favourites again.

      • I’m too impatient! It is interesting to see her having a delve. I guess it makes sense, she doesn’t want to be photographed in the same thing too often, so she rests certain items. The blue button was worn a heck of a lot in 2009/10 and not sure if seen since, and she’s also dug out a lot of the 2010 Canadian stuff recently too. Glad to see she’s getting her money’s worth!!
