Queen Takes Up Summer Residence At Balmoral

Queen Elizabeth officially moved into her Scottish home, Balmoral Castle, today where she was met by the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and their mascot ‘Pony Major’ Cruachan VI. For this ceremonial welcome, the Queen repeated a pale pink straw cloche wrapped in a wide diagonal band of the same pink tweed as her coat. While I was not initially a fan of this hat shape, it seems to be growing on me. Are any of you having a change of opinion about it as well?

  1. I don’t mind the overall shape of the hat, it seems to quite suit her … but what I do mind is the orb-like crown (see the 2012 link for a god look). Why is that even there? It seems like the hat is over-designed but for little gain. In fact, if the crown was perhaps gently concave from lower edge to upper edge I would like it a lot more, even a standard flat link between the two edges would be preferable. And in one colour. Your humble servant, ma’am.

  2. I’ve never had a problem with this shape actually, I think it’s interesting enough to look good, but still let’s everyone see her. I think this outfit is a winner, and clearly so does Her Maj,

    • I agree James. It is one of my favourite outfits in current circulation. The pink tones are just lovely and I think the hat and the coat/dress complement each other very smoothly, easily and beautifully. Thanks.

  3. I don’t care for this shape on her and feel she has many hats which seem to look much better for the shape of her face.

  4. I’ve always liked this hat, particularly the stronger pink round crown and brim (not so visible in today’s pictures, but there’s a good shot from your July 11, 2012, link above) with its contrast to the lighter pink tweed coat fabric.
Although I like the concept and coordination of the entire outfit, what I continue not to like about this outfit is the fit of the coat: it’s too big and appears shapeless. The Queen obviously likes this outfit a lot; she’s worn the dress to numerous investitures.

  5. I think it’s funny now, that because we see pictures of HM all the time, I notice the small details of her outfits. I like the hat and the shape but I think it takes too sharp of an outward curve so I might modify that. I wish I had a room with all the blocks and trimmings so that I might play and design my own hats! I think that it is truly wonderful that at her age, HM works the way that she does!!

  6. I don’t mind it, but it does seem that we see this shape quite a lot….which I why I’ve enjoyed seeing some selections from the back of the hat closet recently. Maybe it’s just me, though–she does wear a hat so frequently that it must be hard to design/select something that doesn’t seem like a repeat.
