As Queen Sofia of Spain was born the daughter of King Paul of Greece, major royal events in Spain inevitably include the Greek royal family. The wedding of The Prince of Asturias and Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano on May 22, 2004 was no exception.
Both Queen Anne-Marie and the Crown Princess chose very feathery hats for this event. Queen Anne-Marie topped her lilac printed dress and jacket with a toque hat entirely covered in purple feathers. I always thought this hat looked like it was plucked from the Queen Mum’s closet and unfortunately, looked outmoded and ageing on elegant Queen Anne-Marie.
Princess Marie-Chantal wore a dramatic ecru picture hat with the brim entirely covered in burnt ostrich feather fringe. It is an exceptionally dramatic hat that could have been a disaster with the wrong outfit but with Marie-Chantal’s ecru dress and shimmering dove grey coat, it was exquisite.
Princess Irene of Greece looked to be wearing a royal blue headpiece around her chignon (below, right).
One of my favourite hats at this wedding was worn by Princess Alexia. This natural straw picture hat is rather plain in shape and colour; when paired with a peacock blue silk jacket and skirt and trimmed with a spray of trailing peacock and mint green ombre feathers, it became spectacular.

Royal Hats 
The only hat I liked from the Greek Royals at this wedding was worn by Princess Alexia. I do not like the feather concoctions at all, and I think they are too over-the-top for what is a church wedding, not a day at the races. I don’t know why Princess Irene thinks wrapping some fabric around her chignon passes for a hat. I did love Marie-Chantal’s ecru dress and dove grey coat, but the hat for me was way too much for a wedding.
I find that Queen Anne-Marie’s ensemble looks so much like the one worn by Princess Anne during Kate and William’s wedding. A purple unusual hat, a printed green and purple dress… I wonder if Princess Anne decided to dress like Queen Anne-Marie…
I could see Camilla in the giant feather hat. She loves those big, swirly, feathery concoctions.
Marie Chantal’s hat has just a smidge too much feather for me–though I do like it. The outfit overall is lovely! Alexia’s outfit is terrific–the green on the hat’s feathers and the shoes really bring the whole look together.
I love how Alexia’s husband Carlos was also brought into the matched ensemble with his green tie!
King Paul’s tie matches Queen Anne-Marie’s purple too.
For the first few years of their marriage, now King Felipe VI’s ties frequently matched now Queen Letizia’s dresses. (“Do you think it was planned?” the press always asked. Since it happened so frequently, of course it was.). Men don’t get much choice in traditional, formal representations, and choosing a tie to match someone’s dress is a nice idea.
I think Marie-Chantal’s hat is too much.
