Spanish Royal Wedding Ten Years On: Swedish Royals

The Royal Hats Blog The Swedish Royal family were also all in attendance for the May 22, 2004 wedding of the Prince of Asturias and Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano. Queen Silvia wore a pale aqua blue ensemble with a matching hat. This hat, with a rounded crown hat and slightly curled brim, was an exquisite colour on the Swedish queen but the simplicity of its shape makes the hat seem ordinary… perhaps too ordinary for a queen.

Crown Princess Victoria caused a fashion stir by not wearing a hat. Her orange embroidered, Asian-inspired silk dress made a phenomenal statement all by itself – instead of a hat, Victoria wisely chose to top it with a small orange feather fascinator worn at the back of her head. I have always thought Princess Victoria looked stunning in this dress although I wonder if was better suited to a evening or cocktail event instead of a daytime royal wedding. The dress seems too sparkly and shiny and that little bunch of orange feathers does not, a royal headpiece make.

While Princess Victoria’s outfit pushed the daytime dress code, Princess Madeleine’s cream suit and rose-beige hat fell quietly within it. The hat, with a short crown and downward curved brim is rather neither offensive nor memorable. While I understand that not all royal hats can be dramatic statements, this one felt like a rather bland millinery choice for this fashionable young princess.

Looking back, I am certainly not as impressed by the hats worn by the Swedish royal family at this wedding as I was by the Belgian, Greek or Spanish royal families. Do you agree?  Is there a hat in this trio that strikes your fancy?

Later today, we’ll look at the hats worn by the Norwegian royal family.

  1. Princess Madeleine = proof of the rule to always look at yourself in a full-length mirror when buying a hat. A hat should flatter your proportions — not flatten them!

  2. Queen Silvia’s pale aqua blue ensemble with a matching hat, was a good color choice for a wedding, and suited her complexion well. It looks like her underslip is dangling below the hemline, or is it meant to be a small frill? If so, rather a bad idea. However, I agree with Hat Queen, that the simplicity of the hat shape seems a bit too ordinary for a Queen at a Royal Wedding. Her jewels look fabulous too.

Crown Princess Victoria really glowed in that vivid, shiny, orange Asian-inspired silk dress, though I don’t get why she wore this to a European Royal Wedding, and it looked more suited to an Asian-themed cocktail event. As Hat Queen has stated, I don’t know why she broke the protocol about wearing a hat to a Royal Wedding, and substituted that orange feather fascinator, as it looked hideous and as though it was made by a small child in a craft class.

Princess Madeleine looked lovely, though her hat doesn’t work with her outfit. The color of the hat suited her well. But sadly it didn’t work with this outfit.

  3. I do love Maddy’s suit. I think her hat would have been a hit if it was the same color as the trim of her suit. I like the hat she is wearing, just the color is off with that outfit. Disappointed in Victoria’s headwear. Silvia looks fine but her hat leaves something to be desired.

  4. Love C.P. Victoria, but I feel both she and her sister could have been standouts at this wedding. There are so many wonderful choices out there, so it makes me wonder why they make iffy sartorial choices and hats which make little sense.

  5. Lovely outfits, boring hats/headpieces. Actually I like the fascinator with the orange silk dress but it does seem not quite suited for a daytime royal weddeing.

  6. Oh dear. I love CP Victoria’s dress but I wish she had worn a real hat. Madeleine’s hat doesn’t coordinate with her outfit and while I like Queen Sylvia’s hat, it is a little underwhelming for such an occasion.
