King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden were in Uppsala yesterday to attend the annual opening of Synod at Uppsala Cathedral. For this event, the Queen wore a black straw hat with a gently upturned front brim and a twisted band of straw wrapped around the crown. This hat is feels rather somber to me- I can’t help thinking that the low brim seems better suited for mourning than a regular royal engagement. A black hat was the right choice to top Silvia’s black and white jacket but I think lighter shape- like that of her black straw beret, feathered pillbox or even this picture hat– would have been a prettier choice. What do you think?

The low angle of the hat gives it a bit of a Paddington Bear vibe for me. Not bad but………
It’s a pretty hat, though we’re used to seeing more of her face. I like it…but I also like some of the other options you posted. Probably picture hat next, then the pillbox, then the beret (those are a harder sell for me).
I agree. It is too low down on her head. The Pillbox hat would have been lovely.
I think it looks fine. Of the other choices you suggest, I think the picture hat would also work. The other two might a trifle frivolous, perhaps?
This hat makes her look older and more mumsy than she really is.
I like this hat very much. elegant and nice size. She looks very nice.
I like this hat and the pillbox would also have been fine. Church in Sweden is generally a very somber affair so Queen Silvia looks very good. I am very surprised to see the bold print on the lady in the back, left. A national costume (right front) is always appropriate
This hat looks like something I could buy in my local shop. Nothing special really. The pillbox hat with the feathers would have been very nice as Queen Silvia wears pillbox hats so very well.
I do not mind it. In fact I like it better than some of others used in the post.
