Queen Máxima Attends Domestic Violence Symposium

Queen Máxima of The Netherlands attended a symposium in Amsterdam this morning marking 40 years of the protection of women against domestic violence. For this engagement, she repeated her scarlet wool felt Garbo style hat with narrow leather band and bow around the crown. I adore this hat! The slightly floppy shape lends an air of informality and effortlessness, which makes this hat look all the more chic. I can’t think of anyone who does red better than Máxima and while a red hat and dress could easily be an assault to the eyes, I think this combination works so well. What do you think of this scarlet combination?

  1. The dress (or skirt/top) and hat are marvellous – yes, Maxima does red very well. I like the clutch with it … but not the shoe colour, and it seems her earrings “match” the shoe colour and that sort-of brown or maroon doesn’t go with the clutch, at least not the bit we can see. Black shoes might have been better, but I’m so glad she didn’t wear red ones. So just a small quibble. When she does fabulous I just want her to be absolutely fabulous! Pearl earrings would have been nicer than the costume ones she is wearing … and a nice pearl brooch.

    • I agree with sandra in some respects. The red is spectacular on Maxima. The clutch is also fabulous. But the shoes throw it off (a little). And, the earrings are unremarkable, like an afterthought. She did have other shoe color choices if she followed the clutch. Red pumps would have been OK I think. I don’t think she needed any jewels at the neck or on the dress. I say let the red speak for itself. Easy for us to say !!

  2. I just want to touch it to see what it feels like, it looks so amazing! The leather band and bow is really good too. Clean lines all round to let the hat be the standout. Just Fab. And I agree HQ, the floppiness gives it an air of effortlessness and informality. Amazing colour too. Thanks.

  3. Hats with large brims usually look very formal and this one is such a nice change from that! I’ll take this over any of Maxima’s turban-type hats any day.

  4. You’re spot on. Max does red amazingly. This is a great hat, it’s funky, youthful and chic. I do wish she’d stick with bigger brims. She looks fabulous.

  5. Not my cup of tea at all (in this context). It’s the sort of thing I might wear out on everyday occasions if I wanted a hat (I’ve got a similar one in purple). It would be okay if Maxima were wearing it in a casual or family context – I like it in itself, and enjoy the vibrant colour. But to my eyes it simply isn’t formal enough for this sort of royal engagement.

  6. Nice outfit indeed. Do you happen to know where the clutch is from? I think I’ve seen this design before. Maybe on exactly this clutch?
