Fall 2014 in Royal Hats

Royal Hats  Earlier this fall, we looked at the Autumn Winter 2014 millinery collections from Jane Taylor, Gina Foster and Rachel Trevor Morgan. Today, we’re going to look at the couture and ready-to-wear lines from Lock & Co. Hatters in London.

Designer: Sylvia Fletcher for Lock & Co. Hatters Couture Collection
Synopsis: Fletcher’s couture collection for AW 2014 is a mix of contrasts- there is much black and white and the shapes move from modern sculptures to bold cocktail hats to traditionally prim pillboxes. With zebra print, faux fur and bright hits of purple and magenta, this is not a collection for the faint of heart. Modern, intrepid and confident.
Royals likely to wear these designs: This collection is perfect for Princess Martha Louise of Norway, who has worn Fletcher’s designs to great effect in the past.  We might see a pillbox or pared down cocktail hat on the Duchess of Cambridge but I suspect this collection as it stands is a little too bold for the royals we usually see in this brand.

Designer: Lock & Co. Hat-A-Porter Collection
Synopsis:  Classic fedora, beret, cloche and cocktail shapes in autumnal hues of burgundy, brown, navy and black. The embellishments are restrained and the lines are very clean. Contemporary, understated and urbane.
Royals likely to wear these designs: Any of the young British princesses would look incredibly chic in this collection. Princess Beatrice has worn cloche hats successfully in the past and I would love to see her in the chocolate “Upper East Side” cloche above. I would also LOVE to see the Japanese royal women in some of these designs (one can dream, right?).

Are there any hats here you think would be perfect for a particular royal?

  1. I like all these hats especially the first hat and the third hat in the first group, that vibrant purple color and original design is perfect.

    • I agree TiarasRUs, these hats are all stunning. The two purple hats are my favorites and I hope that we will see these hats worn by the royal ladies. The purple would be very stunning on Princess Beatrice’s red hair.

      • I agree, the purple would indeed be very stunning on Princess Beatrice’s red hair. It could also work well on Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s platinum locks or on the Duchess of Cambridge’s chestnut locks, and on my blonde hair also! I want them!

  2. Similarly as soon as I saw the Hat-A-Porter collection I thought of Autumn Phillips, the colours are really good for her and I thought in particular that the Sprinter might be a good choice. From the Couture Collection I thought the Duchess of Cambridge might choose the Vespa. She likes those embellished percher types, but may choose to have it tweeked a little for her specific requirements as she often does. Like you say HQ all clean lines, classic with a contemporary confident vibe. I can picture the Swing (white in the couture collection) working for someone, but I just can’t figure out who. Good fun, Thanks.

    • The ‘Vespa’ (top right above in purple with large flower trim) is similar to the red hat the Duchess of Cambridge wore for the Flotilla Parade during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (also designed by Silvia Fletcher for Lock & Co.). I wonder if she would choose the ‘Vespa’ because it is so similar to something we have already seen her wear? Purple would be a magnificent colour for Kate!

  3. I would love if the Duchess of Cambridge wore either the “Swing” or the “Shrimpton” in black for Remembrance Sunday! Or in white for Christmas. I also think the “Motown” would be lovely of Princess Eugenie. Autumn Phillips in the “West Side” and Zara in the “Central Park.”

  4. P Beatrice, of course, popped into my mind when I scrolled through these. I could also easily picture Sophie and Autumn Phillips in several of them. What about the ‘Tribeca’ for Queen Maxima?
I love the purple beret with giant flowers!
