This week saw a number of sparkling state dinners around the world. Three young queens brought their ‘A game’ in evening finery and a crown princess we rarely see at such things made an appearance. There weren’t any hats but the royal gowns and tiaras should not be missed:

I agree with Sandra and jamiemid, I have the utmost respect for the hard-working Princess Royal. Her daughter Zara also seems to be a good person, and a devoted sportswoman and a good mother. I can’t believe how different Queen Máxima looked compared to former Queen Beatrix in the Württemberg Ornate Pearl Tiara, and it was great to see this magnificent tiara out and about. It was wonderful to see Princess Masako looking so good at her first state dinner in more than a decade, and attending two daytime occasions, and it seems largely due to the influence of the lovely Queen Máxima. It was certainly a good week for us royal watchers.
I agree with Sandra. HRH is one of the hardest working royals on the planet. She is very interested in what is going on in the world, and less interested in what goes on her. She is always neat, comfortable and appropriate. She shows up and does her job, and she is always good for a sound bite or two. In that respect, she is very much like her father. With her, the clothes take a back seat to the events she is attending and that is admirable. She always looks engaged in what is happening. I admire her a great deal. She is a straight shooter, and has no patience for silliness. She is one in a million.
The Australians can’t help themselves, can they? Anne arrived late (was it 10 minutes, was it an hour, it makes a difference) in a “nondescript beige” suit and promptly criticised koalas. She can’t win. Koalas are, in fact, pretty unhygienic animals, their high death rate from an STD partly caused by their habit of sitting in their own body wastes. If you’re ever given one to hold, the keeper will tell you not to put your arm or hand under its bottom.
The reporter doesn’t know or care that Anne is one of the hardest-working royals, that she doesn’t care if her visits aren’t covered and that RFD is a charity that she has an interest in, she’s not just a name on their PR. And for the job at hand she’s dressed sensibly (including sunhat, a must in Australia), if not fashionably.
