Empress Michiko Departs for Belgium

This morning, Empress Michiko of Japan began her journey to Belgium to attend the funeral of Queen Fabiola tomorrow. She wore a pale grey rimmed saucer hat trimmed with a charcoal puffed bow. The scale of this hat is an excellent proportion for the Empress and I thought the mix of pale and dark grey hit just the right tone to set off on this somber trip. The choice of this hat today might be predictable, but it is a very good one.

The Emperor and Empress have only attended the funeral of one other foreign monarch (King Baudouin in 1993). The Imperial Family of Japan blog speaks about the close relationship between the Imperial Couple and the late King and Queen of Belgium at this post.

  1. I love the Empress’s hat and her outfit. It is so kind of her to travel such a long distance at her age to pay her respects to the late Queen Fabiola. My only peeve is that you can see the elastic holding the hat on. The milliner should have made this in the same color as her hair.

  2. I trust the Empress (and member of the Japanese royal family in general) implicitly to have the perfect approach to mourning outfits. No flim flam fascinators forthem on solemn occasions.

  3. Her Majesty looked stupendous at the funeral mass. She looked like an Empress from another age. So beautiful. Love this little traveling hat. She is lovely.

  4. Although these hats would look ridiculous on many people, when I think of Empress Michiko, I think saucers. This one is particularly attractive.

  5. I usually do not care for her saucer hats, but this one looks quite lovely on her. She is so elegant and carries herself with such grace.

  6. That style of hat is perfect for her face and her tiny frame. She always is the epitome of serene elegance, and she is quite lovely. I have admired her since I was a child.
