We saw so many hats worn by members in the House of Orange this year that we need to break this review into two parts! First, we’ll look at all of the hats and headpieces worn by the Dutch princesses. Please click on each photo to link to larger views and detailed information on each hat.
Princess Margriet
Princess Laurentien
Princess Annemarie and Princess Margarita
Princess Beatrix
Do any of these hats make your list for best of 2014? Are any of them on your list of least favourites?
Stay tuned later today for a review of all the hats Queen Máxima wore this year.

How I love dear Beatrix. Compared to some years her hattery wasn’t as thrilling, but as she’s now a princess, I can’t blame her for going a little more low-key and repeating shapes more often. None of the other Dutch royals had terribly exciting hats either, although I did really like Laurentien’s beret with the feathers for Prinsjesdag.
I like all Princess Margriet’s hats, and I think she is one of the best dressed royal ladies of all. My favorite hat on this page is her in the blue hat (photo number 2).
Princess Laurentien’s cream wool and pheasant feather topper is the only hat she has worn that I have ever liked (photo number 6
reading left the right, and from top to bottom). I loathe the headpiece she wore in the photo to the left of the cream wool and pheasant feather topper (photo number 5), as it looks like she glued a bath pouf onto her hairband. It is hard to judge her taste because she wears hats so seldom.
Princess Beatrix is a lovely lady, but her hats all remind me of cakes, and I am bored seeing the same style. I loathe the hat in the final photo, with the pointy crown. If I absolutely must pick a favorite of hers I would chose the gold hat (the first in the series of photos of her, and photo number 9 in the total series), as it is typical of her style, but the gold color is unusual for a hat and suits her very well. I also love her in blue, so any of the blue hats can be called my favorites of hers, though I wouldn’t wear them myself.
She has it figured out…why fix it if it isn’t broken. I would enjoy knowing her. Such a nice person. Her style wins for me.
I like Princess Beatrix’ hats because she loves them. Would I ever choose to wear one? No. But they suit her and by golly, she knows what she likes! I think that the pointy ones look like chess pieces.
I think I like Princess Margriet’s cornflower blue hat best of all on this page. Also, Princess Laurentien’s cream wool and pheasant feather topper is nice.
Next up, Queen Maxima!
I like Princess Beatrix but I am not generally a fan of her hats. I do like the orange and navy straw hats–#15 and 16 above. They flatter her and are a bit different than her usual selections, though not much.
Well you can’t accuse Bea of not sticking to her style can you!! She looks fab as ever of course, but they’re all so similar I can’t really pick them apart. Still, it’s wonderful to see her hatting about, although she’s surely earned the chance to put her feet up! I think Margriet wins it for me, she always looks rather sassy for an older lady, and that’s always a winner for me!
IT WAS the best of hats, it was the worst of hats, it was the age of a well balanced chapeau, it was the age of fascinator foolishness, it was the epoch of straw hats shot with metallic accents, it was the epoch of incredulity (literally),
The dutch ladies are never wont for all the drama of a victorian novel in their millinery.
Suddenly MrFitzroy is craving a nice slab of layer cake.
MrFitzroyOBE you cracked me up! This was not only funny but spot on! I love Princess Beatrix, but her hats always make me think of cake!
I wish someone would send this to Princess Beatrix and perhaps it might cause her to consider her one note hats?
Her hats are very consistent and they suit her so well. She has found a style that works for her which is not easy for us women of a certain age to do.
