British Royals Wrap Up Sandringham Stay

On the last day of their Christmas/Winter holiday month spent at the royal Sandringham estate in Norfolk, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip attended Sunday church service. The Queen repeated a pale grey coat and hat we last saw on her a year ago. This brimless hat seems to be an interesting variation on a beret with a tall straight side and diagonally sloped crown (UPDATE Several readers have correctly identified this as a toque hat). Trimmed with an awkwardly erect feather on the side (visible here the fist time the Queen wore this hat), the dull colour of this hat and it’s odd proportions does not make it one that I particularly like. What do you think?

Queen Sonja Opens Danish Exhibition

Last Friday, Queen Sonja opened the exhibition “Christian Krohg and the Times of the Kristiania Bohemians” in Copenhagen. For this event, she repeated her black sequined beret-style brimless hat. In the first photo, the hat looks a little squashed but all seems restored in the second photo. This is a sharp, angular hat but I think that makes it interesting and it seems well suited to Queen Sonja. What do you think?

Hat from the Past

The Royal Hats Blog   On February 10, 2006, Prince Albert of Monaco attended the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. These photos of the perennial bachelor, who looked like he was working hard to impress a mystery blonde date, were an international sensation. I don’t think anyone in the royal world suspected that the goofy prince in the red ski hat would marry the mystery blonde, South African swimmer Charlene Wittstock, five years later.

Princess Benedikte Celebrates Children’s Center

Last Thursday, January 30, Princess Benedikte of Denmark attended the 60th anniversary of Benediktegården, a nursery and day care center named in her honor. Benedikte wore a tan wool hat with striking abstract pattern inlaid into the crown of the hat. While I am not partial to the colour of this hat, I love the inlaid pattern and think it is a very effective way to make a traditional hat shape look contemporary and very striking. What do you think of this hat?
