Birthday of Princess Margriet

Royal HatsPrincess Margriet of the Netherlands celebrates her 71st birthday today (take a look back at her 70th birthday hat retrospective last year). Since here sister’s abdication last year, we have seen less of Princess Margriet than we have in the past – she has certainly earned retirement but fewer engagements inevitably means fewer hats. Margriet has worn hats of all shapes and sizes throughout her royal life. With her short hairstyle, however, I think she looks best in a small, embellished hat. Wouldn’t this beautiful “Black Watch” cocktail hat (the work of Vancouver milliner Kelly Dunlap who designs “The Saucy Milliner” label) be marvelous on Canadian-born Princess Margriet?

Birthday of Princess Claire of Belgium

Royal Hats

Princess Claire of Belgium celebrates her 40th birthday today. As Claire does not have a formal royal role, we  see her just a few times a year at major royal events. Her hat style is a little fragmented- Claire seems to choose hats in classic shapes with simple embellishments…

I admire her sense of millinery adventure and willingness to try different styles. Choosing a hat for Claire was difficult; in the end, I have gone with a classic wool fedora in a beautiful dark bottle green fur felt, trimmed with a vintage silk ribbon flower. This hat was made by Kristin Silverman of Silverhill Creative Millinery and I think it would be stunning on Claire.

Imperial New Year’s Poetry Reading 2014

The annual ceremony of New Year’s Poetry Reading (Utakai Hajime) was held at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. The Japanese royal ladies attended this event in court dress, just as they did the annual New Years lectures last week.

Empress Michiko, at far left, did not wear a hat. To her right is: Princess Kiko in a grey embroidered calot; Princess Hanako in a marvelous green pillbox wrapped in green fur (or maribou?) studded with wispy grey feathers; Princess Akiko in a pale pink calot; Princess Hisako in a royal blue bumper hat; and Princess Noriko in an embellished terra-cotta orange brimless pork pie hat. It is marvelous to see the ladies in some colour and hats with a bit of personality, isn’t it?!

Birthday of Princess Michael of Kent

Royal Hats Princess Michael of Kent celebrates her 69th birthday today. Marie-Christine’s hat style, as we all know, tends toward the dramatic. While she occasionally wears an oversize pillbox, she is most often seen in a large picture hat trimmed with showstopping flowers, feathers or bows. I thought about recommending a different hat style for her but can’t imagine her truly suiting a tailored trilby or minimalist calot. I think Princess Michael simply suits a picture hat- the bigger and more dramatic, the better. The hat I have chosen for her is made by New York milliner Suzanne Newman, a hat designer who makes marvelous high-society hats. I think this pairing of designer and muse would be a match made in millinery heaven.
