Cambridges Kick Off Tour

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived in Wellington today to began their long-awaited tour of New Zealand and Australia. For their arrival, Kate pulled out some serious millinery stops with the first pillbox hat we have seen on her, in brilliant red. This oversize pillbox featured a slightly indented top (similar to a pork pie hat) with a crescent of delicate coordinating red flowers and leaves circling around the back. It is the largest hat we have seen on Kate in several years and I can only hope that this fantastic hat is a taste of more great millinery yet to come on this trip. Do you love this red pillbox hat on Kate as much as I do?

Bourbon-Parma Family Celebrates Christening

Prince Carlos and Princess Annemarie of Bourbon-Parma christened their younger daughter Princess Cecilia at the Cathedral of Piacenza in Northern Italy yesterday.  For this special day, Princess Annemarie wore the most delicate cream silk rose fascinator trimmed with lace and fine net tulle. I thought she looked absolutely exquisite.

Little Princess Cecelia wore a bonnet of what looks like antique Battenburg lace. I thought she looked very sweet and suspect that her older sister Luisa’s sour face below was because she was forced to attend the event without a hat.

Prince Carlos’ sister, Princess Margarita of Bourbon-Parama, arrived with their aunt, Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands. Princess Margarita wore a pale pink pouf fascinator that coordinated with her coat and lace sheath. It was not the most exciting of headpieces but somehow, it worked with her ensemble. Princess Beatrix wore a very pretty melon-hued picture hat with upturned brim, ruched band around the crown and large side bow. The hat alone, I quite like. The hat with the sorbet-striped tunic and skirt however, was a little too…. orange. I suppose for a member of the House of Orange, this may not be an unwelcome criticism! Prince Carlos’ aunt, Princess Marie of Bourbon-Parama (pictured below right with Carlos’ brother Prince Jaime and sister-in-law Princess Victoria) was also in pink. Her hat defied gravity with a sharply angled brim and large side pouf bow. I loved how it coordinated with her chic bobbed haircut although I think the fur cuffs on her suit are horrid. Fur and pink jacquard together is never a good idea.

Prince Carlos’ other aunt, Princess Cecilia of Bourbon-Parma (I suppose she must be who they named the baby after) wore a vibrant blue pleated straw and flowered headpiece. This headpiece left me scratching my own head as it did not seem to relate to her ornately patterned suit. I think the mix of swirls, scrolls, pleats and flowers was a little too much for one outfit- especially an outfit that looked like it was attending a Christmas soiree from the neck down and a garden party from the neck up.

Despite these quirks, it was lovely to see members of the Bourbon-Parma family who we don’t see that often. It was also lovely to see this family so happy to christen their little daughter (a daughter who arrived early and spent many weeks in hospital). As we offer our best wishes to this family, I ask you, dear readers, which of the royal christening hats did you like best on this day?

Phillips Family Cheer at Grand National

Members of the Phillips family stepped out yesterday to cheer Monbeg Dude (owned by Mike Tindall) race at the Grand National at Aintree. Zara Phillips looked great in a navy straw beret trimmed with navy silk roses and a checkerboard imprinted feather. Perched at the perfect angle on the side of her head, I thought this hat brought out her blue eyes and looked fantastic.

The great millinery surprise of the day, however, was the Princess Royal. Princess Anne wore a large navy picture hat with a square, sculpted crown and dramatic diagonal brim. The shape and scale was unlike any hat we have seen her wear and, most surprisingly, the hat looked like it was made in the past decade. While the pheasant feather trim was cheeky and fun, the furry wrap around the crown ruined the hat for me. Remove the fur and we have a fantastic hat here for Princess Anne. What do you think of these two new navy hats?

UPDATE: This photo shows the upper side of the brim on this hat appears to be covered in some sort of feathers. I still like the scale and shape of this hat but regrettably, need to declare the trimmings a disaster.

Designer: unknown.  The shape of the crown is very similar to these hats worn by the Queen. The shape and over-trimming makes me guess it is the work of Angela Kelly

Swedish Royals Visit The Netherlands

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia arrived in The Netherlands today to begin a two-day visit. They were greeted by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam.

Queen Máxima repeated the same silver headpiece and suit she wore for Princess Arianne’s christening in 2007. While I did not like this headpiece the last time we saw it (last November worn with a jade lace dress), there is something about this suit and hat that just works together. I think it might be the clean lines and round neck of that beautiful jacket that coordinate with the clean lines and round shape of the hat. Nevertheless, I thought Máxima looked so regal and elegant in this ensemble that I nearly forgot this hat is not closed on top and simply wraps in silver rings around her head.

Queen Silvia topped her red coat off with a smart black beret (if this hat looks familiar, take a peek here!). We often see Silvia in pillbox and calot hats and it was a nice change to see her in this modern, structured beret. The scale of this hat was very flattering on her, as was the styling of her hair with it. Compared to Queen Máxima it may seems a little boring but on it’s own, I think it is a lovely hat. What do you think of this pair of royal hats today?

Imperial Couple Remember Empress Shoken

Emperor Akihito, Empress Michiko and Crown Prince Naruhito visited the Meiji Jingu Shrine in Tokyo yesterday to commemorate the 100th anniversary of death of Empress Shoken (1849-1914). Empress Michiko wore a white saucer hat covered in delicate fabric flowers and leaves.

The Imperial Couple also visited a museum dedicated to Empress Shoken. Empress Michiko repeated her dove grey saucer hat with large bow in coordinating grey striped fabric. While grey is probably my least favourite colour for the Empress, I do like how the two-toned bow coordinates so beautifully with her suit. The suit and hat combination is wonderfully chic, don’t you think?
