Princess Kako Pays Respect to First Japanese Emperor

On Saturday, Princess Kako visited the resting place of the first Japanese Emperor in Kashihara City to report her coming-of-age. For this visit to Emperor Jimmu (660 BC -585 BC), Princess Kako wore a simple black silk bowler hat with domed crown, upturned brim and monochrome black band around the crown. The hat and long coat provided great contrast to the ivory coat and white hat she wore the previous day for her visit to the Ise Shrine.

  1. Princess Kako looks lovely. This is a good example of a well-made bowler hat with the right proportions to flatter the wearer, without giving off a Charlie Chaplin vibe.

  2. Just beside the typical Japanese very correct ‘fashion’; did Emperor Jimmu really lived 126 years or do I mis-read?

    • The first thing to keep in mind is that Emperor Jimmu’s life and reign is part of a Japanese legend recorded in the Kojiki. That being said, his is indeed understood to have lived 126 years and the dates attributed to his reign are February 11, 660 BC to April 9, 585 BC (dates based on the lunisolar traditional Japanese calendar). I find it fascinating that such specific dates are attached to this legend.

      • Thank you for explaining. It is lovely that the Japanese royals keep honoring their ancestors. They observe very classic rituals; their fashion however is a bit – ehm – plain. I do like the fact that the royal ladies recieve a full parure when they reach a certain age. I truly enjoy your blog, very detailed and always respectful.
