Hat From The Past

Royal Hats Not to a hat per se, but a lace veil. 52 years ago today, Princess Alexandra of Kent chose head to toe (plus a 21 foot train) lace for her wedding ensemble.  It`s a LOT of lace but this statuesque royal bride carried it well.

  1. The bride looked lovely, but the train was too hard to handle for her, and once trains get to this length, the bride looks like they are towing a curtain, especially in the case of Diana, Princess of Wales. For me, there was too much lace. I don’t like high necklines on wedding dresses. The tiara was stunning and is one of my favourite tiaras. I liked the silhouette of the dress, it was figure-flattering.

  2. At that wedding the bizarre styling of Princess Margaret’s hair, up and over her hat, will always be a bit of a head scratcher for me.

  3. Beautiful silhouette, classic….could I say timeless!! The veil is extraordinary. Also liking the matching, contrast lace around the hem and neckline. Thanks.

  4. Always a class act, Alexandra is, and it seemed like she had a truly happy marriage with Sir Angus. This wedding also was a showcase of great 1960s millinery! So many royals at this wedding who are no longer with us unfortunately. Princess Marina wore a great hat to this wedding.

  5. So lovely and elegant. So Alexandra. The gown and veil were perfect for her. In the group photo, it almost takes on a blue tone. I also loved that the boys were in kilts. The young bridesmaids looked angelic – right down to the halo circles on their heads

  6. I know a lot of people think this is too much lace, but because the design is so simple and the lace is all the same I don’t agree. And the fact that Alexandra is so elegant and regal also helps. She was a very beautiful bride, and is clearly held in very high regard by all of her family – she’s always seemed like such a lovely lady.

  7. Also one of my favourite Royal Ladies, as Jamiemid says she is serenely beautiful. I wish we saw more of her in the royal news.

  8. The lace is extraordinary, and the bride looks so serenely beautiful in the pictures. Every time I see a picture of Princess Alexandra, I am reminded of how much she resembles her late mother, Princess Marina. The design of the dress was simple, but the bride and the lace combined, make it something very special. Thank you for a look back at one of my favorite royal ladies, and the links that explained what went into the design and construction. I was a child at the time of the wedding, but I have no memory of it, which is surprising, because my mother and her friends loved royal weddings and romances! I have no doubt she would have devoured any picture and coverage that there was at the time.
