Dutch Monarchs Wrap Up Canadian Visit

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima concluded their Canadian tour in Toronto yesterday with stops at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, MaRS Discovery District hub, and Toronto Islands. Máxima chose another neutral hat for these engagements, this time in wheat gold straw and with a diagonally upturned brim. It is a rather simple hat of good proportion that became a stunner thanks to great styling with Máxima’s white dress and gold accessories (minus those dangling gold earrings next time, please).

The King and Queen will be in the USA next week and I strongly suspect we’ll see several more hats. What grade would you give  Queen Máxima’s millinery fashion on this North American visit so far?

  1. I think Queen Maxima looks lovely. The hat is a great size – large but not comically large. She can pull of the enormous hats, but this one is a nice size for a day of visiting.

  2. I love this whole look and the hat is fantastic, but I only wish she had done a little more with her hair. Glad to see the Canadian visit was a success and I hope the same happens here this week in the U.S.!

  3. I can’t wait for her to visit my country next week! I’ve simply fallen in love with her, thanks in part to your marvelous blog. I give her an A- so far.

  4. Love everything except the earrings. Quite stunning color combo with her skin and she looks like she’s lost a few pounds.

  5. I am trying to find a link but my Dutch is a little fuzzy this morning… However, these earrings are very likely part of a folk costume in Holland. The earrings were only worn as part of a woman’s Sunday for best. They aren’t just gold dangly earrings – they have special meaning and as a Dutch person I find it an incredible honour that she would choose to wear her best on a trip to Canada, a country that means so much to so many Dutch people.

    • I wish there was an edit button! The third sentence should read, the earrings were only worn as part of a woman’s Sunday best.

    • Thank you Patsy, the link is fascinating reading. I don’t mind the earrings with this outfit, in fact my first reaction was (before I read your link)I rather wish her hair was done up so we could see them better.

  6. Love.
I’d like to see this hat with the green lace dress, too.
Barring the day of the lace coat/striped dress, Maxima’s looked lovely on this trip.
My favorite outfit was the evening she wore the ruby tiara, though–she was spot on!

    • I hat the same thought RE: the green lace dress-the rest of the gold accessories, too, please! I thought yesterday’s dark tan were lovely, but a bit “autumny”. The gold would be much more seasonally appropriate.

  7. Beautiful hands. Hair is off. Nice outfit. Two hats so far are close in colour and style. In fact all of her hats are similar. Featuring brown in accessories on this tour. Think of brown more for autumn than spring but maybe that is just me.

  8. I think this is my favourite look of the three outfits with hats that Queen Maxima has worn on this Canadian visit. The hat here is a beautiful shape and tone. The gold hued accessories work wonderfully with the white dress; Maxima looks fabulous!
I loved the outfit Maxima wore on the second outting of the tour; the lace dress was lovely, and the hat was looked fantastic on Maxima (a size and proportion of hat that only she seems able to make work!)
Maxima also looks great in the navy, white and magenta colours that she wore on day one, however I don’t believe that the dress, hat and coat were as successfully paired.
I am looking for to seeing what further fabulous hats and outfits Queen Maxima wears next…
Thank you for these posts Hat Queen!

  9. Fabulous outfit, fabulous styling, fabulous accessorizing. The earrings, however, were simply off. They would look better in the jewelry box. They are too long, too heavy, and too much.
