Dutch King and Queen Conclude American Visit

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima wrapped up their visits to Canada and the United States with a final day of events in Chicago yesterday. For the fifth hat worn on this visit, Máxima chose to repeat her pale gold ruched toque. The brimless hat was a great compliment to her high-necked jacket and fit well with the retro-vibe of her ensemble. Her hairstyle and drop pearl earrings also set the hat off very well.

This North American visit has been an extremely successful one in terms of hats. Interestingly, Queen Máxima did not début any new pieces of millinery but instead, styled five of the six hatted appearances with different outfits than had been paired with the hats before. It’s a brilliant approach to royal hat wearing on such a high profile tour and further illustrates what a millinery maven the Dutch Queen is. What hat was your favourite on the North American visit?

  1. This is my least favorite hat of their whole North American tour. As most others have said, it blends in with her hair too much; the rest of her ensemble is excellent however. My favorite look would have to be her appearance at Grand Rapids, followed closely by her visit to Arlington Cemetery. Maxima really brought her A game to this trip and I thought she looked amazing at every appearance she made. Brava!

  2. The brimmed golden hat was the best, and Maxima really brought her hat game on this trip! I even liked the black one, and usually that style makes me cringe a little–but it looked beautiful with her outfit.

  3. While I would love to closet raid Queen Máxima’s beautiful suit, jewels, and accessories, I would leave alone this pale gold ruched toque. It blends a bit too much with her hair, and also would with mine. This color would look good on red or warm brown hair. I don’t care much for the hat itself, which looks like those small turbans you can buy to hold your hair back while you apply makeup. I preferred her other tour hats over this one.

  4. I think the brimmed gold hat that she wore with the white dress and orange dresses was my favorite of this tour. Looked great with both outfits, and if she ever gets tired of it she can just mail it to me! 😉

  5. It’s not my favorite of her hats and this one in particular is too close to her hair color to be entirely successful. but the white suit is fabulous!

  6. I am not a fan of this hat, especially from the front, because it is so close to her own hair coloring that it looks like she has a messed up hair style.

  7. This is my least favorite hat of the tour. While it looks attractive actually in the third picture, the fourth and fifth pictures particularly show the problem: hair blends in with the hat and, from a distance, just looks like a mess. I like today’s outfit in general, though.
My favorite hat of the tour was either the huge navy picture hat of day 1 in Canada or the repeated wheat gold hat from Canada and Michigan. It was a spectacular tour for hats, though.

    • I agree about the hat blending with her hair – perhaps a similar hat in a contrasting colour would look better. And I wish she had put her hair into a bun of some kind – hair just hanging down looks careless.

    • Having traveled quite a bit with hat boxes, I can tell you that Queen Max’s hat selection quite coincides with two huge hatboxes for the picture hats. The small soft hats can easily be tucked inside a big hat box with a floppy with neither being damaged in flight . Three hat boxes is incredibly clumsy. (Even for a Queen!) LOL

  8. Now that I know the designer puts her own pin on each hat … I’m seeing them! Thanks HQ. I like this outfit as a whole, she looks very nice.

    • I don’t think it’s a pin, but simply a logo added to the hat. A hint for you- on brimless hats, Fabienne Delvigne’s logo is usually at the back. For hats with brims, the logo is usually tucked in beside the side trim.

  9. I’m really not enamoured of this hat, but I do think that Maxima looks very good here as an overall appearance – this is about as good as this hat will get!
