While the Norwegian Royal Family are not direct relations of the Swedish Royal Family, they are close friends. As such, the Norwegian royals were well represented yesterday at the wedding of Prince Carl Philip and Sofia Hellqvist.
Queen Sonja wore Queen Maud’s Pearl and Diamond Tiara, a beautiful piece made of up diamond scrolls and festoons topped with upright pearls. This piece looks great on Sonja, whose hairstyle does much to soften its high, central peak. What didn’t look so great, I’m afraid, is the voluminous, pleated, bright yellow silk dress. But then, I think anything with a large neckline ruffle should be outlawed.
Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore what is known as the Diamond Daisy Tiara, a piece gifted to her from King Harald and Queen Sonja on the occasion of her own wedding in 2001. The narrow piece features round diamond daisy flowers held within diamond circles that create a scalloped bandeau shape. As far as tiaras go, this one is very simple but it is a great fit with Mette-Marit’s clean lined fashion aesthetic. She wore a Temperley patterned silk skirt for the wedding today- a piece that seems so very her. I thought her ensemble was fresh, modern and very pretty.

Princess Märtha Louise wore the tiara we have seen on her most over the years, the King Olav Gift Tiara. Another narrow piece, this tiara features ears of wheat studded with small pearls. It is a delicate piece befitting of a princess with a minor royal role and I thought its placement yesterday, tucked back over Märtha Louise’s chignon, worked well. What did not work as well, however, were her large earrings, which looked like costume pieces. A delicate dress, delicate necklace and delicate tiara needs delicate earrings, don’t you agree?
Next up, a look at the tiaras worn by other royal guests.

I know I’m five years late to this post, but I found my way here, so others might to. I’d just like to say that the Norwegian royals are very much related to the Swedish royals. King Harald is 50% Bernadotte through his mother, Princess Märtha of Sweden. She married her first cousin, Crown Prince Olav of Norway, and then became Crown Princess Märtha of Sweden. This would also make Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Märtha Louise 25% Swedish as well…
I realize MM is fond of the small daisy tiara, but I do wish she’d mix it up just a little….is there another small tiara in the vault that she could snag?
I like that they all mixed up the tiaras so that they wore ones they hadn’t worn to Swedish weddings before. I love MM’s outfit, really springy, and ML looks funky. Her hair/tiara arrangement is stunning.
And Sonia! Well, you gotta love a bit of old big bird. This dress is as old as the hills, yet hasn’t faded with age! I can’t say I like it, but I love her for wearing it. It could be 20 years old but Sonja’s not in the mood for retiring it. And well, good for her I guess!
From the video feed inside the church it looked like M-M had some extra sparkle at the back of her hair. Did anyone else notice, or was I going cross-eyed because it was 2am here?
Just seen a back view elsewhere – a pair of sunbursts (diamond brooches, perhaps)? tucked at the back of her lovely hairdo.
Those wacky Norwegians – we had Ari Ben going all pirate-y at the pre-wedding dinner, and then look what Sonja and M-M got up to! Generally I would say ‘yay’ to soft pleats, but not in this day-glo yellow. Sonja has a lovely figure, an attractive face and wears tiaras well, such a shame to be mired in an ocean of neon custard.
I wish M-M’s outfit was a dress and not a skirt and top (imagine the pattern running over a dress) – but if not I wish the top was in raspberry or cerise, not pale pink; and I wish the skirt wasn’t fitted from the waist to the hips but full from the waist … and it might, just might, have been okay. The pattern on the skirt is kind-of pretty, but this outfit is so ‘off’ for a royal wedding.
So, even though I don’t much care for dresses that hobble the wearer, Princess M-L is the winner here.
Why raspberry? She wore bright red high heel sandals.
I am still puzzling over Mette Marit’s outfit. I did not like the top one bit. The sleeves were too long and too tight, and the whole top so plain – not worthy of a Royal wedding, I think. Her skirt, too, was ok for a summer evening at home… not a Royal wedding.
You’d wear a silk designer ball gown skirt for a summer evening at home? Sign me up for your life.
Plain to some = streamlined, minimalist, modern and beautiful to others.
I think Martha should have borrowed the amethyst tiara/necklace to wear with those earrings. I wished Mette Marit would a different tiara. Didn’t the Kings late sister return some tiaras?
Queen Sonja’s peal choker looks so fantastic with her tiara. I like her jewels but not her dress- for Martha Louise, I love her dress but not the jewels. Something about those earrings, tiara and necklace don’t work together.
That leaves Princess Mette Marit. I love the color and pattern of her dress but not the cut. I also wished she saved this tiara for her daughter (it is a perfect starter tiara) and wore larger ones.
1972 called. It wants that yellow dress back.
LOVE LOVE LOVE MM’s skirt and top.
Sorry to say this but Martha L’s dress and earrings look really cheap.
Of all three ladies, Sonya’s pearl necklace and MM’s earrings are worth noticing. Some day’s are home runs and some are not
All three tiaras were beautiful. I am not a fan of Q Sonja’s dress, not only because I’d the ruffle around the top, but the color was too bold. MM was underdressed in a skirt and top, but she does look pretty in pink. I didn’t care for the color of ML dress, but you’re right, a more delicate pair of earrings with a beautiful dress color would be smashing.
Martha Louise was the best dressed of the three. The other two dresses were odd. I do not like the tiara or hairstyle of the Queen. She had a nice shawl…lace trim.
I thought M-M’s skirt was too casual for the occasion. Pink is a lovely color on her, but it just didn’t work for a formal event. The queen’s dress was not something I want her to wear again. Martha Louise looked okay. I didn’t mind the earrings, and liked them, but I understand your comment and why you thought something more delicate would have been a better choice. They really didn’t fit with the delicate necklace and the tiara, but I like them and thought they were pretty. Maybe she wanted to add some color to what she was wearing?
