Swedish Royal Wedding: Royal Guests

Royal Hats A number of other reigning royal houses were represented among the guests at Prince Carl Philip and Sofia Hellqvist’s wedding yesterday. Queen Mathilde of Belgium topped her blue gown with the bandeau bottom piece of the Nine Provinces tiara. The simple scroll motif and low height of this tiara make it a more modest piece but in combination with her diamond and pearl drop earrings and diamanté studded off the shoulder gown (in what is THE most perfect shade of blue on her), Mathilde looked classically beautiful.

Queen Máxima wore her Mellerio Ruby tiara, a piece made up of three large scrolls connected by suspended diamond swags. With a matching necklace and bracelet, the tiara makes a grand but very light, delicate statement. I thought it was the perfect piece to pair with her embroidered lace Jan Taminiau gown, a gown many of you will recognize from her and King Willem-Alexander’s inaguration in April 2013. As she often does at such formal events, Máxima looked incredible.

The Countess of Wessex wore her Aquamarine tiara made up of diamond scrolls around a central aquamarine. It was beautifully paired with small drop earrings, an aquamarine pendant and a grey lace dress by Czech designer Taťána Kovaříková. While some might be underwhelmed by the streamlined gown, it was exactly the right cut and shade to show the aquamarines to greatest effect and I thought Sophie looked very elegant.

Princess Hisako of Takamado wore a diamond tiara with small pearl drops that, like the tiara she wore for Princess Madeleine’s wedding two years ago, I assume is one from the vast Japanese Royal collection allocated for her use. This piece is a perfect proportion for petite Princess Hisako; it appears that it combines with her earrings and delicate necklace to form a diamond and pearl parure. Throughout the video stream yesterday, Princess Hisako seemed to be enjoying herself immensely, wearing a wide smile and looking most lovely in her pale green, gold embroidered gown.

Just two posts remain in our coverage of the Swedish royal wedding- royal representatives from non-reigning royal families are up next.

  1. This is without a doubt the best group. I was speechless when I first saw this. I love that Maxima and Mathilde interact and it is nice to see them admiring each other’s outfits. SO BEAUTIFUL!

  2. Máxima all the way. She looks absolutely stunning. What elevates her above ALL the others is the way the hairstyle and the tiara are totally in sync. The tiara is naturally, elegantly and beautifully placed amongst the do and the do is cleverly and naturally coiffed around the tiara to make it appear so balanced and perfectly positioned. They are in complete harmony. Love it. Love the colour of the dress and love the necklace. Perfection. 💕🌟

  3. I thought Max and Mathilde knocked it out of the park with this one. Mathilde looked beautiful and elegant, and then along comes Max. Wow! It doesn’t get any better than this. They get my votes for most beautiful, most elegant, and the most fun. Sophie’s gown was a lovely color and she looked lovely. The dress, the jewelry, everything made for a very quietly chic presentation. I did not love her dress, and in fact, I found it underwhelming, but taken with the other elements, it worked. I do love a royal wedding, and this one, along with Prince Frederick and Princess Mary’s were my favorites of all time, because the brides and grooms were so obviously happy. My runners up are Princess Claire and Prince Felix of Luxembourg, and Prince Guillaume and Princess Stephanie, also of Luxembourg, all of whom were very happy and sweet on their wedding days. The Grand Duchy does it right!

  4. I’ve fallen in love with Max in this outfit – this is what you wear to a royal wedding. Just gorgeous. I can never picture myself wearing a tiara (when I dream over a cup of tea) but I would fight her for that necklace! Loved that Max brought a fan as part of her outfit – everyone in the church was waving their service sheets around.

Mattie is a winner too, beautiful. She’s so serene and elegant, and this is utterly her colour.

Sophie, meh. She’s reliably good, but this doesn’t wow me, although I get that aquamarines are a hard colour to ‘match’. The lace detailing looks a bit like an attempt to stop the dress veering into night-wear territory.

Hisako did look like she was enjoying every second and her outfit looked very nice (nice jewels too).

  5. I enjoy seeing the different royals interact with each other. Mathilde with her exquisite simplicity looked simply regal.

  6. This is the best group! I love Sophie’s chic look, and I’m glad that tiara has got another outing, I was wondering where it had gone. Max is stunning, those rubies should be too much, but she carries it off! And Mathilde is quiet elegance. Great showing.

  7. Queen Mathilde and Queen Maxima both look statuesque, regal and elegant. What two amazing queens they have become!
At first glance, I didn’t like Sophie’s dress but after reading your thoughts, it is growing on me. She has really come into her own.

  8. They all look great – but I so wish Max would cut her hair to this length – it’s so much more becoming on her when it’s pinned up like this

  9. Princess Hisako has a bird on her sash and I love it! Queens Mathilde and Max look glorious. Both of them hit just the perfect note. I really like Sophie’s dress, in fact I’d like to HAVE Sophie’s dress! The color is pretty with the aquamarine jewelry. But I think I will never love that tiara.

  10. Mathilde and Max both look AMAZING. I’m not a fan of Sophie’s dress but get what you’re saying about it needing to be light and simple to work with the pale blue stones. Hisako’s dress is a bit much for me but she looks cute.
