Queen Máxima visited the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam yesterday to open an an exhibition on Dutch design over the past 200 years. For this opening, she repeated her large burgundy picture hat with a low, square crown and large mushroom-shaped brim. Despite its very simple grosgrain ribbon trim around the edge of the brim and base of the crown, the colour and scale of this hat give it loads of dramatic impact. With her striped gold and claret dress and orange accessories (an unusual choice that work surprisingly well), Máxima certainly stands out in a crowd.

This hat is a whopper that I couldn’t pull off, but Queen Máxima does. I think that when you wear such a statement hat and dress, you really do need to keep the accessories simple, and the orange coloured bits and pieces really don’t go at all.
Please forgive me I have a side note…today I was watching the TV show The View…Princess Eugenie wore a print dress to Ascot…a member of the panel wore the same pattern…perhaps it is the new rage. I thought it was interesting.
This is a hat for a hat Queen!
Probably a good candidate for Best hat of the year. 🙂
Not exactly sure about wearing orange with this tone of red, but Maxima is the only one around who can surely pull this off.
Amazing! Fabulous! Stunning! Chic!
This is how to do horizontal stripes. Love the dress and adore the hat.
The hat and dress are fabulous. I’m not too sure that the orange neck oddity and accessories were the right choice, but they do make a memorable outfit, and that’s what Queen Máxima is noted for. (Perhaps she couldn’t find her burgundy accessories in time; perhaps they looked boring.)
On a technical note, I went to add that it looks as though the grosgrain ribbon around the brim isn’t even; it’s puckered in the last picture, and that seam in the ribbon at lower left looks terrible. When we’ve gotten rear views of Queen Elizabeth’s hats, the results have been surprising. Does no one look at the back of hats before they’re sent off onto royal heads?
I agree with everything Snug Harbor says: June 20, 2015 at 6:28 pm.
Maxima has magnificent pearls that would have looked fantastic with this outfit. She looks like she’s got some scary sea urchin around her neck, and it does tie all the orange together, and I love the orange. Even with that Natan monstrosity around her neck, she manages to look amazing.
Another fantastic outing for one of my favorite Max hats!
Another fantastic outing for Maxima! My only dislike about this is her odd necklace/scarf piece, otherwise I love the combination of maroon with orange. As others have said, this hat would drown others, but not our dear Dutch Queen!
As for the mayor (or whatever his official position is), I think he looks fantastic and I’m obsessed with double monkstrap shoes. I don’t know why people think brown shoes with a navy or grey suit is bold, considering Italians have been doing so for decades and I think they are great looks which I often choose myself. Just my opinion though (and hopefully not to sidetrack too much).
Jake you are spot on.
Is that necklace a lobster?
Fabulous! Just fabulous! The orange accents are inspired.
Love this outfit, and so bold of her to match orange with maroon. Only Max could make it work. I think the neck wear is more of a scarf than a necklace as it looks furry like it’s made from ‘novelty’ yarn, but why a scarf in June? (It’s winter where I am so I had to remind myself that Max is enjoying summer but, apart from the hat, this outfit doesn’t scream summer so maybe it was a cooler day.) The mayor beside her in one shot is also rather bold … brown shoes with a blue suit!
I don’t care for the orange accent color.
As for the mayor, we’re seeing more and more brown shoes with blue or grey suits on men, and frankly, I don’t get it.
HatQueen, GREAT job this week, and you must be tired. . .take a week off!
Max looks wonderful in this huge hat. It would overpower most women, but she really carries this look off. The hat is a great color and I like the view of the detail on the top of her hat. Ok, now the question I’ve been dying to ask… What is that neck jewelry made of? The orange and maroon look great together, but that item looks like a big orange caterpiller
A tricky colour combination – but I think Queen Maxima is able to pull it off. She looks great and that hat is fantastic. Do my eyes deceive me or is that a single lonely hatpin?
The orange upsets everything.
Max had the body type and head to pull off these big ones so well! It’s a fav style of hat on her for me
You always choose such good pictures to show us the hats. This one is so beautiful but I think the orange necklace, scarf, gloves and shoes are rather weird.
I have really enjoyed all the Ascot hats. I haven’t commented because the hat designer guests have said everything there is to say (and more!). Thank you for a very enjoyable week of hats.
