Princess Eugenie at Goodwood Races

Princess Eugenie, who recently moved back to London, attended Ladies’ Day at the Glorious Goodwood races today in Chichester. She used the occasion to début a large asymmetrical hat. Described by the designer as a silver grey straw “large disk hat with waffle veil and pearl brooch,” the hat cast a much larger footprint than any other Eugenie has worn this year. It’ a great shape and scale for her and I appreciate how the bold shape is softened by the light colour and romantic trim. I’m just not sure the hat was showed to greatest effect with her simple white dress and grey jacket.

  1. Agree with the comments re the jacket–there are several reasons it doesn’t work. But the chief one, to me, is that it just doesn’t suit the princess: not a flattering color or cut for her–cuts her off in the middle. (Looks like the top part of a bath robe!) Certainly does not go with the rather nice hat–and the brooch is too much.

  2. I adore this disc hat and white dress on Princess Eugenie. I would make these adjustments: move the hat a bit back and less vertical, replace the wrap jacket with a structured jacket/blazer, and grey shoes instead of beige. Looks like she copied the hat’s placement on the mannequin which is certainly dramatic but not practical.

  3. I note that the angle of her hat is different in the second picture. I find that interesting.
I like the hat. I think it goes with her face.

There seem to be people here who spend a lot of time and effort to make their hair look like Eugenie’s does here; it may be entirely on purpose.

I like her jacket. I would like to own it. I agree it needs to be taken to the tailor to have it fitted properly. It looks off the rack because it does not fit in the bodice. Her dress does fit nicely and is lovely to see on her.

She looks radiant which is always lovely to see, and overwhelms the sartorial hicups in my mind.

  4. My goodness what a mash up of an outfit, yet it’s an outfit that could have been rescued by just small tweaks. I agree with most of the comments already made:

Hat seems nice but placed wrongly; jacket, just no; dress might have been more flattering just below the knee and *not* in white; updo would have raised the whole look; not nude shoes.

Which together sound harsh, but if the dress had been another colour and he jacket had gone or had some structure I could have been all for it. I like the hat and I like it on Eugenie, but it does look like she’s awkward with the placement.

  5. The hat is a little too flat but it’s very elegant. The brooch detail is too much for daytime. The hat is also too dressy for the jacket. Eugenie’s sweet smile gets the win here!

  6. Something is wrong with that hat………..it looks like it is going to fall off or fly away. I think she is having a hard seeing from one angle and I don’t like the color on her, to pale for her coloring. She looks much better in bright colors. As for that bed jacket, that belongs right where it should be, in her bedroom, it is such a horrible wrinkled jacket with no shape at all. This is a very sloppy look for her, a more structured jacket with a one button closure or just a simple short jacket in a different color would look nice. Her hair……….never did understand a girl with this much money and could not get a good hair cut………

  7. I like the hat as such but it is her hair that kills the look for me. It looks brittle and damaged and I do not understand the haircut. In my eyes the hat needs a more elegant hairdo.

  8. I like the hat very much!!! A good choice.
I like the cut of the jacket too, but it’s sad to see it is wrinkled, wrinkled, wrinkled.

  9. I love this hat and am glad to see something larger on Eugenie! I like it paired with her white dress (agree the jacket did her no favors), but I wish her dress was instead in a vibrant color, like teal, cobalt blue, or crimson. I think then she would’ve looked absolutely stunning! Also, she should’ve chosen grey or black shoes instead of nude.

  10. It doesn’t look like she is really comfortable with this hat. She seems to be tilting her head at a strange angle. Beautiful hat, nice color, but the outfit, especially the jacket, does not work with the romantic hat.

    • Exactly! Her head is always cocked at a strange angle, and in one side shot, there seems to be a gap between hat and head. Lovely hat, but she needs to wear something she is comfortable in

  11. This is an excellent hat on Eugenie, and nice to see her going for something bigger than is her wont. I think the hat and dress go well together, and I think the colour palette is a good one overall, not exciting, but elegant. But the jacket could do with being more structured to bring out the best in the hat.

  12. I like the hat, but perhaps it needs to sit a little further up and back on her head, it looks as though she has to keep her neck at a strange angle to properly. The dress is nice – jacket not so.

  13. That hat needs some squared off shoulders in her jacket to make the shapes work together better – not huge shoulder pads but enough to pull her shoulders up and back and make the garments less ’round’ fitting in with the angles of the hat better – I do like the shade on her. Didn’t know she had moved back to the UK.

  14. The hat is outright nice. The jacket might work if it was pulled down on the right side and done up less tightly. The dress shows simplicity pays off.

  15. Love the hat, it’s not great with the dress, but not offensive. However the jacket is bizarre! Way too close to the color of the hat, but not quite. She needs more contrast or to match exactly, not the in-between.

  16. I’m so happy to see a larger hat on Princess Eugenie! The pale gray looks great against her face and hair but with her white dress and that crumpled jacket, it’s a very bland outfit. I imagine this hat with a bright floral 1950s style dress with a full skirt and nipped in waist.

  17. That hat is great, but that awful jacket loves to see another day – it was unflattering at Ascot last year and it still is. Take it away and the dress is fine (though perhaps a tad too short). I wish she’d stick to what works: 1950’s shapes and great tailoring to flatter her lovely curves.

  18. She moved back to the UK?! When did that happen? And is the tall drink of handsomeness in the middle picture her boyfriend?

The hat is super cute but that jacket has to go.
