Queen Máxima Opens Supportive Home

Queen Máxima was in Laren today to open Papageno House, an independent living and work experience program for young people with autism. For this visit, she chose an understated hat in pale pink straw with a rounded mushroom brim and simple ribbon band around the base of the crown. I thought the his classic hat made an elegant pairing with Máxima’s pastel striped summer dress – the two pieces are perfect together.

This hat created a few questions for me because it looked familiar but my archives indicate today’s outing was its first. I thought it might be a reworking of the hat below-  you’ll notice some subtle similarities in colour, crown shape, and the gently curving pattern in the straw on the underside of the brim. The difference between the two pieces seems to only be the brim, which looks like it might have been removed, turned upside down and reattached to create the hat we saw today. I am assured, despite the similar shape, however, that these two hats are indeed two different pieces. It’s interesting to compare the similar shapes nonetheless.

  1. In reading all the comments, I think they are different hats and that is fine for this way she can always repeat either hat for they both look great on her. My preference is the upturned brim on the side for that looks a bit sassy to me, and that dress is wonderful on her. Love that fabric for it looks very polished and perfect. She looks very engaging in the photographs which shows she is very interested in the event and the people.

  2. That one hat is lighter in colot than the other really doesn’t matter: colors vary so from photo to photo. The crown, the proportions of the brim and the texture certainly look as though it could be the same hat. Why couldn’t the brim simply have been re-steamed? This was (apparently) what happened to the navy blue and white hat Queen Elizabeth initially wore in Canada and then wore, modified, on the Eurostar to France last year.
Whether one or two hats, I prefer the photos from several years ago, but the current outing for Queen Máxima is perfect.

    • The folded finishing seam on the outside of the brim is the give away- in the original hat, it is folded toward the crown of the hat (on the top side of the brim). Had the had been resteamed, it would be on the outside edge of the hat we saw today. Instead, the seam is on the underside of the brim.

  3. This is a gorgeous lampshade hat for Máxima. If it is the repurposed FD hat, looks like they also replaced the hatband (it looks wider and without the bow). Either way, great hats both. And her outfit here is another winner; definitely would not mind a repeat.

    • Jake you are spot on, and I would love both hats ( or the two versions if they are indeed the same hat) and the dress isn’t too bad either.

  4. This is a lovely summery outfit and the hat complements it beautifully. Might it not be the previous hat with the brim pulled down all round and maybe re-steamed? The straw hats I’ve got that are this big style with this softer brim (ie not a boater-type) are all a continuous weave from the crown to the brim, so there isn’t a separate brim that could easily be taken off.

  5. Not many of us could get by with a hat that soft a color, but it looks wonderful with her complexion. And what a beautiful dress! An excellent shape on her and lovely fabric.

  6. The colour seems different but I never trust colours on the computer. The dress colours seem familiar. I do think she looks lovely.

  7. She looks beautiful but I prefer her in an upturned brim. I think it’s a different hat – the color of todays hat is lighter.
