Scandinavian Monarchs Install Bishops

On Sunday, the monarchs of Denmark and Sweden each attended the installation of bishops in their countries. Queen Margrethe of Denmark was present at the installation of Henrik Wigh-Poulsen as bishop of Aarhus, resplendent in the mint green bumper hat she first wore for her birthday earlier this year. These photos shoe the lovely curled detail on the side of this bumper hat’s brim, a wonderfully creative touch that I think sets this hat apart. My only concern is that Margrethe seems as excited about this hat as I am (it has been worn four times since April)…  I just hope we don’t see it too often.

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia were at Upsala Cathedral on Sunday for the ordinations of Mikael Mogren as bishop of Västerås and Johan Dalman as bishop of Strängnäs. Queen Silvia repeated her turquoise straw pillbox hat for the occasion. It’s a simple hat that elevated to greatness thanks to its fantastic colour.

I think both of these hats are prime examples of small-scale millinery done very well. What do you think?

  1. I love Queen Margrethe’s hat with the great-looking coat!! The color is pretty on her. one thing I would change is her handbag…. The quilting and color make it much too casual for the outfit. The shoes look old. Even a nice, smooth black leather bag and shoes would have given polish to the ensemble. I think Silvia’s hat is appropriate with her coat and dress; the blue is pretty on her. Perhaps a larger, bolder pin would have been nice, too.

  2. I think Queen Margrethe looks really good in this shade of green. I think the suit fits her very well, which many of her clothes do not. Although I am not usually a big fan of bumpers, the colour and the interesting design, with its quirky, curving lines makes it a winner. I like her quilted beige shoulder bag too. Queen Silvia’s simple turquoise straw pillbox hat looks good. She suits this colour well. Pillboxes work so well with her hairstyle, and head and face shape.

  3. I love the trim on Margrethe’s hat; there’s a lot of interest there. As a life-long Jackie O lover I’m always happy to see a pillbox, but I can’t get past the fact that this gorgeous shade of blue doesn’t seem to be doing anything for Silvia. It could just be the pictures though.

  4. Margrethe looks lovely in this outfit and I think she has received so many compliments on it that she has worn it more than other coats and hats. Wish she would repeat the basic shape of the hat and coat with minor changes such as color and hat adornments, coat with a collar, different buttons, etc. She could mix and match with this wardrobe of hats and coats with great success.

As for Silvia, she looks her usual elegant self. Maybe she is wearing pillboxes so much because it suits her hairdo and face shape. She very seldom puts a foot wrong in the millinery department as well as the clothing and color department.

  5. I like Margrethe’s hat very much, and unlike rather a lot of hers, it doesn’t look like something a granny would buy off the peg in a very basic department store. (I except the Teletubby hat, which no department store would dare to stock…)

  6. So great to see more detail with Margrethe’s hat, but I agree, let’s not repeat this one too much too soon. The cerulean color helps save Silvia from being boring, but I do wish she would wear some more brimmed hats; I’m growing a bit tired of this pillbox phase for her.

    • I agree. Silvia really does wear a pillbox well. Margrethe is such an artistic personality, it is odd that she doesn’t have a larger more dynamic wardrobe. Perhaps we are spoiled by the variety of ensembles worn by most of the other Royal ladies. When you think of it, Margrethe is much more like the rest of us. And occasionlly she treats us to something truly wonderful. Certainly she doesn’t shy from colour when it comes to evening wear. I have always admired her choice of eyeglasses which do not detract from her jewellery, hats or tiaras.

  7. I like them both very much! I’m not ordinarily a fan of the pillbox, but Queen Silvia looks perfect in this one. The mint green hat is so dynamic!
