Queen Máxima was in Utrecht today to join in Huurdersdag (National Renters Day) celebrations and the 25th anniversary of the National Tenant’s Association. For this event, she repeated a stylized black felt turban.
Photos taken today give us the best view we have seen so far of this piece and detail the moulded swirls that define its shape and create the cuff-like brim that folds around the raised side of the hat. It’s a simple hat that is complex in design and this contradiction makes it such an interesting piece. I’m just not sure that combining it with a haphazard chignon, a 1990s-esque plaid dress, a clunky pair of brooches and blue suede boots was such a good idea.

Her hair looks unkempt and needs to be sleeker. Love the hat. Love the dress, just take away one of the brooches and maybe push up the sleeves a tad. Take away the boots and wear pointed-toe high heels…the skirt of the dress I think will flow beautifully.
Queen Máxima’s hat is an interesting design and suits her well. The dress is ugly. The brooches are over-powering. Her chignon needed to be neater. I like the belt, clutch and boots, though the pieces don’t work with the rest of the outfit.
She should have pulled her hair all the way up and not had the side bun — and left the broaches at home!
The hat looks like a tuque
I like the pieces separately, and they would look better if they weren’t part of this outfit. Having said that, I hate the brooches, and don’t understand pairing two chunky pieces together, and the dress would look better without them. . Almost every piece of this outfit would look better paired with something else. The proportions are not right. The dress might look better without the boots, and there is simply too much black. This was not a fun look. I actually do like the hat, and it works better with her hair pulled back, instead of down.
I like the hat. It allows to see her face. The dress has too much material…too bulky. The boots should never have been worn.
Okay so I don’t hate this as much as others do. The hat sits on her updo rather nicely, and the 50s swingy skirt is quite fun. The brooches are overkill however, and as much as those boots are nice, introducing blue into an outfit that majors in black is an odd choice. However, I’ve seen her look a lot worse!!
The hat is rather nice, but the rest does not do her justice, especially the dress.
I like the hat and the boots but the dress is awful, not flattering at all !
My thoughts exactly!
Another hot mess, although I like the hat this time. Queen Maxima is usually so immaculate and I think lately she’s been over accessorized. If you want to wear something really eye-catching (the boots) then everything else needs to be very simple.
The hat is great and the boots are fantastic, but don’t go together. I think everything else in between ought to be burned, for that dress is not flattering at all and the brooches are tragic. After her previous appearance of near perfection, this certainly is a let down. Hoping she brings back a colorful felt slice hat next to make up for this.
I agree with Peggy. Hat, hair style, and dress were fine. Boots…not so much. I also don’t like mixing the dark blue and black. I can’t tell from the pictures, but if the belt, purse, and boots were blue, then a black hat was not a good choice.
I like her hat. I like her hair style. I hate the two very heavy pins (brooches). I like her dress. I like her boots. But put them altogether and it just doesn’t work. The boots appear to be too heavy for her dress. I think if she got rid of the two brooches and wore a simple pearl necklace and wore heels instead of the boots, she would have been spot on. Queen Maxima rarely has a fashion mishap, but this wasn’t her best outfit.
